Quality Read...

I originally had to use this book for a course in bible college called, 'The Pentateuch'. At the time the book was just a textbook -- until I went back to it a few months or so ago. If you're wanting to understand the first 5 more clearly but don't want to spend the bucks this is the book for you.

Great for the price!

I got this book for a great price and it is brand new. It shipped super fast, but the only reason I did not give it a 5 star is because you have to be careful at the beginning and end of the book do that the pages to not pull away from the binding. I am very good with books and do not handle them hard at all, but the first 20 or so pages you have to really watch to make sure they do not detach from the spine binding. Other then that it wad in prefect condition abs it was a great price.

About the Author
Yutaka Yamamoto is a professor in the Department of Applied Analysis and Complex Dynamical Systems, Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. His main interest is in system and control theory, particularly the theory of sampled data control systems, its application to digital signal processing, realization and robust control of distributed parameter systems, and related mathematical problems. He is a recipient of the G. S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award of the IEEE Control Systems Society, the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education in Japan, the Distinguished Member Award of the Control Systems Society of the IEEE, and various other awards. He has authored or co-authored more than 200 journal or conference papers. He is currently President-Elect of the IEEE Control Systems Society and past President of ISCIE Japan. He is a fellow of the IEEE and SICE, Japan.

“You are about to enter a whole new way of living, eating and feeling. Your soul will sing knowing you are doing the right thing, and even the way you think will change,” Markus Rothkranz writes in his introduction of the book he penned with Cara Brotman, Love on a Plate: The Gourmet UnCookbook.

This two hundred and thirty-two page hardbound targets those interested in favorite meals that are made of raw foods. Containing over one hundred recipes, its goal is to use only raw foods that have been dehydrated, blended, or grinded.

After introductions by both authors, the basics, and recommended supplies, the first chapter is about essential elements such as cashew vanilla milk, Irish moss, almond cheese, types of lunch “meats,” burger patties, jerky, and fruit crackers to name a few.

The next nine chapters focus on recipes that are divided into drinks, salads, snacks, appetizers, breakfast, lunch, dinner, kids, and desserts, ending with resources of the authors. No index is added, so each recipe has to be viewed by theme in the table of contents.

In each section, the name of the recipe is in bold font on the left side of the page with a list of ingredients in the order used and instructions in paragraph format. Full-page, full-color photographs grace the right side of the page. No preparation time or caloric content is included with serving size occasionally mentioned.

With mouth-watering names, some concoctions include grapefruit garlic ginger daydream, pumpkin parfait, unchicken noodle soup, green crunch salad, tabouli salad, chocolate almond flax cookies, apple raviolis, endive hummus boats, jalapeno poppers, curry omelet, durian custard with fruit, naan wrap, Rueben, spicy Thai cabbage, shitake mushroom pizza, pop tarts, spaghettios, canolis, and pineapple cheesecake.

By not heating the food above 118F, most recipes use standard store-bought products that are raw in form and altered but not baked, fried, or grilled. Some specialty items such as sushi wrappers, coconut meat, and Irish moss may be harder to locate. Several dishes appear to be easy to make but take time to soak or dehydrate.

This collection of meals made from raw foods would be ideal for the vegetarian or person trying to eat more healthily. With the beautiful photographs, it is a high-quality cookbook without cooking a meal.

Author Brotman has been eating raw foods since she was a child. In his fifties, author Rothkranz altered his eating habits in his late twenties when he had a brush with death and has written several books.

Beautiful Photos and Recipes, but Not for the Busy Individual

I love the photos and while I followed a vegan life for 2 years it is not how I eat daily other than really eating veggies and fruits on a daily basis. This book does require a dehydrator which I do not own but heating foods on a lower heat is possible in the oven. I tried the Strawberry Smoothie, the Cashew Cheese, the Tabouli Salad with sprouted quinoa and hoped to try other recipes, but truth be told, as a mother of three little ones, making anything else in this book is virtually impossible. It requires time, which I do not have for JUST cooking so I chose to do the simpler foods that were just as tasty. Thank you Cara and Markus for a lovely cookbook with gorgeous photos. Maybe 10 years from now when my kids are not so young and vibrant with tons of energy will I be able to do more raw food experimenting.

An essential part of the martial arts of Japan, such as sumo and karate, the katas are specific sequences of movement that originated during Sakoku, Japan’s period of closure to the outside world from 1633 until 1853. The dedication-to-perfection philosophy of the katas, ubiquitous in Japanese society, is vital to understanding the spiritual aspects of their martial arts as well as other traditional Japanese arts, such as flower arranging, chado- (tea ceremonies), and kabuki theater.

Context is everything...

i admit to having become a Tokitsu Sensei fan....for budoka on the bun bu ryodo pilgrimage this is a must read....provides wonderful insights and innumerable 'AHAAA!' moments regarding the philosophical elements that underpin and find expression in the various kata....after this read Evanescence and Form: An Introduction to Japanese Culture by Charles Shiro Inouye...if you grasp what is offered in these complementary texts it will influence what you bring to the physical manifestation of your chosen art...every time you enter into a kata ( i deliberately avoid the oxymoronic 'do a kata')you are stepping into a living stream which flows through the now...for those who know, no proof necessary...for those who don't....none possible...peace

A fascinating and enlightening read, highly recommended

There is more to the martial arts than fighting techniques. "The Katas: The Meaning Behind the Movements" looks at the katas, a philosophical principle that connects much of Japan's many martial arts, the underlying goal of a dedication to perfection and the endless pursuit of bettering oneself. With much eastern philosophy blended in, "The Katas" is an intriguing collection of principles and makes for a fascinating and enlightening read, highly recommended.

Good, but very deep... It won't make you a better martial artist but nice to know some of the philosophy and thinking behind it

Hmm lets see. Usually when I shop for Karate books it is either about its history, (mis)interpretations, transmissions, applications, and a bit of Zen.

This one is worth a read to get an idea of the "Japanese" influence and thinking/psyche behind the Karate katas. After all, the Kata we see in modern Japanese Karate differ very much from Okinawan or even Chinese southern systems they may have descended from. It's a little difficult for me to relate to some of the thinking or principles... As I am of Chinese descent I expected maybe I could empathise with the whole being a certain ethnicity means thinking a certain way. But I guess the cultures are far too different when you aren't born into and raised in it. Although a way of life or system of fighting may be decscended from Buddhist, Zen, or Confucian principles, their effects on people's lives are only through how these things/principles are interpreted. Some admirable, some laughable. I'm not talking about the Japanese history presented in this book about Kata philosphy, but even in my own interpretation of Chinese history and beliefs I've grown up with. Some good, some laughably bad.

It also feel a little pedantic in that the Japanese "way" is at times portrayed to be superior. But this may be my subjective point of view. The Chapter on Seppukku: The Cornerstone of the Warrior's Kata is an example of why I said that. No matter what history or society views it, at the end of the day there is nothing romantic about suicide or death. I guess this is where I draw the line when eastern and western philosophies bump heads. Where does it go wrong?

It was fascinating to read the author's version of an account of the literary Right wing writer Mishima who committed seppukku in 1970. I briefly encountered this person in Kanazawa Hirokazu's "Karate: My Life" autobiography (translated in English). Kanazawa Kancho is grandmaster of the Shotokan International Federeation (SKIF) and is now 82 years old. He gave a brief chapter on being introduced to this Mishima when he come back from teaching abroad. He taught him one class saying he'll see him next week not knowing what Mishima was planning to do the next day(!).

However I must praise the author's honest commentary on Japanese society and the conflict of self and identity in a nation that is both proud of its achievements yet uncomfortable when it looks at its past which shows seemingly drastically different cultural views on death and its place in the world. This turmoil and conflct is something we learn from and propels us to a brighter and peaceful coexistance. Not that my practicing Tekki Shodan (and others) a million times with this philiosophy in mind will actually achieve this, mind.
