KENJI TOKITSU has doctorates in sociology and in Japanese civilization. Born in Japan, he began studying martial arts as a child. In 1971 he moved to France and began teaching karate. He founded the Shaolin-mon Karate-do school in Paris in 1983 and the Tokitsu-ryu Academy in 2001. The author of Miyamoto Musashi: His Life and Writings and Ki and the Way of the Martial Arts, he lives in France.

Context is everything...

i admit to having become a Tokitsu Sensei fan....for budoka on the bun bu ryodo pilgrimage this is a must read....provides wonderful insights and innumerable 'AHAAA!' moments regarding the philosophical elements that underpin and find expression in the various kata....after this read Evanescence and Form: An Introduction to Japanese Culture by Charles Shiro Inouye...if you grasp what is offered in these complementary texts it will influence what you bring to the physical manifestation of your chosen art...every time you enter into a kata ( i deliberately avoid the oxymoronic 'do a kata')you are stepping into a living stream which flows through the now...for those who know, no proof necessary...for those who don't....none possible...peace

A fascinating and enlightening read, highly recommended

There is more to the martial arts than fighting techniques. "The Katas: The Meaning Behind the Movements" looks at the katas, a philosophical principle that connects much of Japan's many martial arts, the underlying goal of a dedication to perfection and the endless pursuit of bettering oneself. With much eastern philosophy blended in, "The Katas" is an intriguing collection of principles and makes for a fascinating and enlightening read, highly recommended.

Good, but very deep... It won't make you a better martial artist but nice to know some of the philosophy and thinking behind it

Hmm lets see. Usually when I shop for Karate books it is either about its history, (mis)interpretations, transmissions, applications, and a bit of Zen.

This one is worth a read to get an idea of the "Japanese" influence and thinking/psyche behind the Karate katas. After all, the Kata we see in modern Japanese Karate differ very much from Okinawan or even Chinese southern systems they may have descended from. It's a little difficult for me to relate to some of the thinking or principles... As I am of Chinese descent I expected maybe I could empathise with the whole being a certain ethnicity means thinking a certain way. But I guess the cultures are far too different when you aren't born into and raised in it. Although a way of life or system of fighting may be decscended from Buddhist, Zen, or Confucian principles, their effects on people's lives are only through how these things/principles are interpreted. Some admirable, some laughable. I'm not talking about the Japanese history presented in this book about Kata philosphy, but even in my own interpretation of Chinese history and beliefs I've grown up with. Some good, some laughably bad.

It also feel a little pedantic in that the Japanese "way" is at times portrayed to be superior. But this may be my subjective point of view. The Chapter on Seppukku: The Cornerstone of the Warrior's Kata is an example of why I said that. No matter what history or society views it, at the end of the day there is nothing romantic about suicide or death. I guess this is where I draw the line when eastern and western philosophies bump heads. Where does it go wrong?

It was fascinating to read the author's version of an account of the literary Right wing writer Mishima who committed seppukku in 1970. I briefly encountered this person in Kanazawa Hirokazu's "Karate: My Life" autobiography (translated in English). Kanazawa Kancho is grandmaster of the Shotokan International Federeation (SKIF) and is now 82 years old. He gave a brief chapter on being introduced to this Mishima when he come back from teaching abroad. He taught him one class saying he'll see him next week not knowing what Mishima was planning to do the next day(!).

However I must praise the author's honest commentary on Japanese society and the conflict of self and identity in a nation that is both proud of its achievements yet uncomfortable when it looks at its past which shows seemingly drastically different cultural views on death and its place in the world. This turmoil and conflct is something we learn from and propels us to a brighter and peaceful coexistance. Not that my practicing Tekki Shodan (and others) a million times with this philiosophy in mind will actually achieve this, mind.
