DO NOT BUY KINDLE VERSION

I was greatly disappointed by the quality of this book. I bought the kindle version, hoping my daughter could play it from iPad or Kindle - either platform - but we were sadly disappointed. The music is tiny and of horrible resolution, and the lines are spaced so you may have two lines to a page and the duet part interrupts the main piece. Resizing it doesn't work - it becomes a picture, versus a flow you can play from. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK ON KINDLE. We have the 1a book in physical form, and really enjoy it - but DO NOT BUY THE DIGITAL VERSION. You will be disappointed.

Girolamo Zanchi (Latin "Hieronymus Zanchius," thus Anglicized to "Jerome Zanchi/Zanchius") (February 2, 1516 – November 19, 1590) was an Italian Protestant Reformation clergyman and educator.

This entry was originally translated from the Latin of Jerom Zanchius by Augustus Toplady. The first section provides detailed observations regarding the divine attributes necessary to be premised, in order to our better understanding the Doctrine of Predestination.

Chapter one explains the principal terms generally made use of when treating of the Doctrine of Absolute Predestination, and settle their true meaning, including God's love and hatred; of election and reprobation; of the divine purpose, foreknowledge, and predestination.

Chapter four explains the Doctrine of Absolute Predestination regarding reprobation as it respects to the ungodly.

Chapter five shows that the Scriptural Doctrine of Absolute Predestination should be openly preached and insisted on, and for what reasons.

Susan Neiman is the director of the Einstein Forum. Her previous books, translated into many languages, include Moral Clarity: A Guide for Grown-Up Idealists, Evil in Modern Thought: An Alternative History of Philosophy, The Unity of Reason: Rereading Kant, and Slow Fire: Jewish Notes from Berlin. She also writes cultural and political commentary for diverse media in the United States, Germany, and Great Britain. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Neiman studied philosophy at Harvard and the Free University of Berlin and was a professor of philosophy at Yale and Tel Aviv Universities. She is the mother of three grown children and lives in Berlin.

Between the IS and the OUGHT

While this is a slim volume, it's one of the most fascinating & thoughtful books I've read in some time now. Philosopher Susan Neiman examines the current social-cultural glorification of perpetual adolescence, and its fear of actually growing up. There have been several other books dealing with this issue recently, but Neiman avoids their usual approach of analyzing current trends, preferring to look at what she considers the roots of the problem, which she sees as a response to modernity. She invites us to join her in reading the work of Rousseau & Kant, who would seem like opposites, avatars of Romanticism & the Enlightenment respectively -- but as she's quick to show, philosophy doesn't divide so neatly. In fact, these two influential, shaping ideals of the Western world strike me as a perfect example of what Jung called maintaining the tension of the opposites, in that both intertwine in the making of modern thought to this day.

And what precisely is the problem with not growing up? If I had to sum up Neiman's argument succinctly, it's that growing up is hard & requires us to go beyond comfortable & familiar but ultimately restrictive models of life -- and too many find that a daunting, even overwhelming effort, best not attempted in the first place. Moreover, it's obvious that consumer culture encourages such an attitude, the better to reduce the public to distracted drones, easily manipulated & used as a resource to be strip-mined & cast aside when empty. And of particular interest, Neiman explains how easily & eagerly the emotionally immature mind turns to fundamentalism of any & every stripe in its hunger for certainty.

In making her argument, Neiman offers a spirited & convincing defense of the Enlightenment, which is far more than the "dead white male" caricature so many have made of it in recent decades. Her own political bent is clearly progressive: but the ideal she's examining & proposing is thinking for one's own self, especially when applied to one's own dearly & often desperately held beliefs. And in these pages, she asks us to consider exactly why many of us have come to regard what should be just the first step on the road to maturity as the ultimate goal -- remaining young in the worst way, by remaining childish rather than incorporating useful childlike qualities (wonder, curiosity, creativeness) into becoming grown up.

Now, I'm hardly doing Neiman's argument justice in these few short paragraphs. But one of the many ideas I took away from her book is that the complexity & richness of genuinely growing up can't be reduced to a bumper sticker slogan, a Twitter comment, or a hashtag. What's required is an ongoing life of the mind, a willingness to give up reassuring illusions for a sometimes painful knowledge of the world -- and of ourselves.

terrific book!

I love this book--it's serious, thoughtful, and genuinely illuminating. I appreciate the insights it offers into the plight of people coming of age today, having little to grow up into by way of meaningful work or anything out there in the culture to connect to, other than products to buy; which explains their reluctance, the Peter Pan syndrome. “Those who rule society promote our dependency,” says Neiman, describing the “infantalizing processes” that offer us a “range of toys" while “ideas of a more just and humane world are portrayed as childish dreams to be discarded in favor of the real business of…finding a steady job that fixes our place in the consumer economy.” I also appreciate learning something about some of the philosophers I managed to miss out on in my education, whose ideas Neiman presents with clarity and passion. This is a book that dares to say something important about ways we live and might live better. Thank you, Susan Neiman! And thank you FSG, for restoring some faith that some publishers publish something other than junk.

a clear philosophical grounding for a familiar view

Susan Neiman has two focuses in this book. First, she wants to give a fairly commonsensical idea of maturity -- being "grown up" -- a philosophical grounding, and then she wants to make clear the extent to which the current state of our "western" culture makes maturity difficult to achieve. Her chapter on education, work, and travel -- all necessary for maturity, in her view -- is an analysis of how each of these has been corrupted or lessened in significance in the current state of our culture. That might sound like pretty anodyne analysis, but Neiman acutely connects the deplorable current trends to earlier analyses by philosophers like Kant and Rousseau, who saw in their times (the period of the 18th Century Enlightenment) what now look like the seeds of our current conditions and who also understood the mental tendencies that can lead people to become distracted by change or novelty instead of purposefully thinking about how to judge these trends maturely. Thus she can connect these earlier writers with later cultural critics with a philosophical bent like Nelson Goodman and others. The idea that our culture infantilizes us is not, of course, original with Neiman, nor is her insistence that the infantilized products of a culture are very vulnerable not just to commercial manipulation as "consumers" of the latest trendy things but also, and more dangerously, to political manipulation by ideologues whose success depends on the intellectual passivity of their followers.

Neiman's account of what it means to be grown-up is rooted in a philosophical understanding that goes back to Kant (and sees Kant as responding to deficiencies in the accounts of human development by Rousseau and Hume) and his location of the source of mature human mental functioning in the postulates of practical reason and in the exercise of judgement. She supports the Kantian vision with accounts of human development by modern developmental psychologists, and in doing so her intent seems to be to establish the prescience of Kant about human development -- she quotes quite a lot from Kant's treatment of pedagogy -- and to assure her 21st Century readers that the idea of maturity that she's advocating isn't retrograde or discredited. My own view is that she makes her case. She particularly focuses on the importance of the development of trust in early childhood, because it's on that basis that a child begins to be able to handle the awareness that the world as it is -- the "is" -- is not as it should be -- the "ought" -- so that when the child comes to adolescence and begins to notice things like unfairness, suffering, and even parental imperfection, he or she can negotiate them without being tempted to regress into a childish passivity or develop into a cynical adult who sees no point in trying to make the world over in the image of something better and who sees other human beings as no more than impediments to his personal projects or instruments that might be useful to him in the pursuit of these projects. The idea of maturity as involving a sense that ideals are worth pursuing as well as a "realistic" awareness of the limits that the world and the culture puts on our efforts is, as I suggested earlier, not new, but Susan Neiman's philosophical grounding of that insight is valuable, and the more so because she manages to write "philosophy" in a way that is clear, appealing, and often witty, without diminishing the seriousness of what she's talking about. Kant thought that "ordinary" people had the cognitive equipment to think philosophically, and implicitly Neiman is working on that humane and rather optimistic assumption too. Recommended.

Excellent resource for couples, business people and parents!

Marshall Rosenberg has initiated peace programs in war ravaged areas around the world including Ireland, Serbia, Croatia, Rwanda and the Middle East. He also gives workshops has worked in the prison systems and has applied his ideas with great success in a variety of settings. His book that goes along with this audio series Nonviolent Communication was a textbook for one of my communication courses which was a requirement for a Masters in Integral Psychology. In short, he is a highly credible author with a gift for simplifying complex topic down to simple models that could be applied easily in daily life.

The basic model he uses allow a person to unravel the trigger for an emotion from the actual cause which is often unconscious thinking or beliefs. For example, if I child didn't clean his room that is not necessarily the cause of the parent's anger. The real cause is some underlying need for example that the parent is concerned about the child developing discipline or an examined assumption such as my child is ignoring what I asked them to do. The point is that we often jump into action or go immediately to a negative emotion without much CONSCIOUS thought. This four step process allows you to deepen your awareness so that when you are in situations that might automatically trigger you, you can chose more healthy options.

Another aspect of the four step process is staying with emotions until one uncovers the underlying need. Sometimes, this involves the emotion shifting to another one. For example, say my partner gets angry because I didn't do the dishes. Rather than just starting an argument, Rosenberg would advise my partner to stay with her emotion. By being willing to fully feel the anger, she might realize in actuality that she feels hurt. By staying with the hurt she may have the realization that her underlying need is actually to feel loved and that me doing the dishes is symbolic for her of loving her and being concerned. With this additional awareness she is in a position to make a more vulnerable and powerful request that is likely to get her what she really wants. For example, using the four part model she might say, "When you forget to do the dishes (observation), I feel hurt (feeling-notice there is no blame or shame) because I notice that I'm not feeling loved because I associate you following through on things like that with being concerned for me (the real need). Now that you understand how I feel, would you be willing to be more vigilant about your agreements over everyday stuff because when you do it makes me feel like you care (request).

Admittedly the model is simple, but it is also very powerful. Most of us act without awareness much of the time. In our time contrained culture, we also tend to dismiss feelings as sources of information about needs that are important to us. This model helps you to get back in touch with the purpose of your emotion and your buried needs. It will help you to increase the intimacy in all of your relationships, not to mention helping you to make requests that are more likely to get you the results you wanted in the first place.

If you are serious about changing unhealthy communication patterns, I would also get the book to accompany this audio set. Patterns of language and the thinking that accompanies them are deeply engrained. In fact, there are often hidden assumptions in our automatic thinking such as OTHER people CAUSE our emotions. We actually have a lot of degree of control over how we feel when someone does a particular behavior. A lot of this depends upon how we "frame" or contextualize the behavior. This book is very useful in helping you uncover these patterns and changing them.

In my practice as personal growth coach I often recommend this book and audio CD to clients. I've seen this information help a lot of people and it has helped me too. If it helps you avoid even one argument with an important person in your life, it is well worth the cost. I guarantee it will raise your awareness around your unconscious processes and help you to have healthier relationships if you apply the ideas faithfully.

The CD on giving and receiving anger compassionately is especially good. This is a problem area for a lot of people and I think this CD alone justifies the cost of the set. Don't be deceived by Rosenberg's simple presentation of ideas. It is often the most simple ideas that are the most powerful when applied in daily life.

1. Observe what's happening - what's really going on? What is happening or being said that you either like or dislike?
2. Identify your feelings about it - anger, joy, hopeful, inspired, lonely?
3. Figure out what need you have that is driving that feeling
4. Ask for what you need (explicitly)
Really helps you how to handle situations in the real world.

Richard Poulin is cofounder, design director, and a principal of Poulin + Morris Inc. (http://www.poulinmorris.com), an internationally recognized, multidisciplinary design consultancy located in New York City. His work has been recognized by major design organizations, competitions, and publications including the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), Communication Arts, Graphis, Library of Congress, Type Director Club, and the New York Art Directors Club. Richard is a Fellow of the Society for Environmental Graphic Design, the organization's highest honor, and is a past President and board member of the New York Chapter of AIGA.

Piet Zwart (1885–1977), a Dutch craftsman, draftsman, architect, photographer, and pioneer of modern typography, was born in Zaandijk, north of Amsterdam. From 1902 to 1907, he attended Amsterdam’s  School of Arts and Crafts, where he became interested in architecture. His early work involved designing textiles, furniture, and interiors in a style that showed his affinity for the de Stijl art movement. Zwart was influenced by many of the modern, avant-garde movements, as well as Jan Tschichold’s (1902–1974) Die Neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928). He was also one of the first modernist  designers in Holland to apply the principles of de Stijl and constructivism to graphic design in the built environment during the 1920s. From 1921 to 1927, Zwart worked for H. P. Berlage, the most influential  Dutch architect of the era. Hendrik Pieter (H. P.) Berlage (1856– 1934) was the architect for the First Church of Christ Scientist complex in The Hague. This modernist complex is composed of a church, assembly hall, residence, and school with its interiors designed by Berlage, in collaboration with Zwart. One primary example of this collaboration is located above the entrance to the complex in a series of metallic gold-on-blue ceramic tiles containing bold, square, sans-serif “fat-face” letterforms designed by Zwart to visually integrate with the rectangular architectural form of the church. Throughout the  auditorium, typographic inspirational quotations are located on walls and ceilings articulated in a similar graphic manner by Zwart, reinforcing a strong visual integrity to the graphic and architectural identities of the buildings.

Zwart synthesized two distinct and contradictory points of view—the constructivist movement’s visual playfulness and de Stijl’s formal functionality. With the First Church of Christ Scientist, as well as with his  entire body of work, this typotekt, as he called himself, created a unified language that has prevailed for the last eighty years and to this day strongly influences contemporary graphic designers.

The author's enthusiasm on the subject definitely shines through in this book. He invites you on this journey through time and space to stop and think about some of the most iconic and familiar built signs, symbols, and structures that you recognize and maybe even encounter in your day-to-day life, but haven't really ever contemplated their stories and how their presence and specific design actually has impacted you.

By harnessing an extensive knowledge of the niche between the worlds of Architecture and Graphic Design this book wonderfully illustrates what happens at the pinnacle of collaborative study. A book which definitely deserves a spot on the shelf of any self-respecting design enthusiast.

Save Your Money

This book unfortunately is an inferior reproduction of a genuinely valuable book by Cheiro. It appears to have been xeroxed then mass printed. The reproduction is so bad that the photographed palm prints given as crucial examples at the end of the book cannot be read because they came out black rendering the lines of the palm invisible. The information Cheiro has to give is truly important. He was THE premiere palmist of the late 19th and early 20th century and what he has to say is extremely important to anyone interested in palmistry. This book however, because of its poor reproduction, is worthless. Try to find a better reproduction or investigate auction sites for an original copy.

A Very Good Book with Some Faults

This is a very good book. You need to spend time on it to appreciate its value----accuracy!! Follow closely what the author says, attempt to read the lines on your palm and judge for yourself... At least in my case, they are amazing accurate.
One concern about this book are the 31 plates of Famous Hands at the end of the book. You can hardly see them clearly (too much dark parts with the lines), the last printed page is a picture of Cheiro's Indian Room (an absolute black-or-white "photograph", not a normal black-and-white photo in shades of grey). Fortunately, the author makes little reference to the 31 plates, the only mention is on page 147 (refers to Plate XXV) and page 150 (Plate XXIV). With a brief description of the appearance, for example, on page 147, "The excessively drooping of the line of head (Plate XXV) on a pointed or conic hand ...", is useful when the reader reads parts of page 147 and 150.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Certain parts of the main texts are also not very clear (but still can make out the words)---looks like xeroxed copy of a xeroxed copy, for example pages 16 and 17. If you can get hold of this copy, look at these two pages and decided whether you still want to buy this book. Not all people will find the printing acceptable.

Good but ...too much paper for little text

Yes, there are 296 pages including the blank ones. though the book brings valuable information about hand reading, the price is too high for a xeroxed copy. But if you don't mind that and you are seriously involved in learning hand reading it is OK.
I am happy anyway, the information here will let you know accurately the past, present and future, health state and much more.

I bough this book expecting a more through coverage of apparel design. i was somewhat disappointed, mainly due to the fact that you have to buy the partner book, Pattern drafting, by the same authors in order to do anything with the instructions given. Pattern Making for Fashion Design By Helen Joseph Armstrong is a much better, easy to follow book for all levels of the pattern drafter and designer.

It is what is says.. a DESIGNING book

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU ALSO BUY " HOW TO DRAFT BASIC PATTERNS" BY THE SAME AUTHORS. This book is good because it teaches how to use the basic "slopers" (basic patterns) and manipulate them to create OTHER design styles. IT DOES NOT, however, describe in detail how to develop the basic sloper patterns. It skims over that part, showing only brief pictures and giving basic information about the basic slopers and assumes that you already have the slopers to create new flat pattern designs. "How to Draft Basic Patterns" is the companion book that gives detailed instructions( -almost too tediously detailed insturction...) on how to develop the basic sloper patterns. I personally think they made us design students buy these two books in school because it was a chance to cash in on students buying two textbooks for class. The authors could have put all the info of both books into one book- EASILY!! If you want a good ALL IN ONE book that teaches both basic sloper development and design style creation with the flat pattern, one which is also fairly easy to read and "get through" in order to develop your patterns, try the flat pattern written book by Helen Joseph Armstrong.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who drafts patterns, from beginner to expert. Not only can one use this information for current styles, but can also apply these techniques for historic and fantasy costume. The text is straightforward and easy to follow, and the illustrations are simple and clearly marked. Enjoy!
