Jairam ramesh, a member of parliament, has held key ministerial portfolios during 20062014: rural development, drinking water and sanitation, environment and forests, commerce, and power. besides this, in his capacity as an economist and policy expert, he has been the adviser to the prime minister and the finance minister. he has also served in the planning commission of india, ministry of industry, and the advisory board on energy.

Great read! Very lucid too!
To the Brink and Back is an honest account of what went on during the most crucial pre reform period. Small details like, P V Narsimha Rao not using speeches prepared by his aides etc, makes the book very interesting and convinces reader that it is truly an insider’s view.
Apart from its value to the readers as history of India’s economic reforms, the book will be of immense value to students of politics, public policy and art of negotiation. Author has very effectively brought out the crafty nature of the then PM, PV Narsimha Rao and how the PM and his team negotiated and made the reforms palatable to all. The book is also rich with references like crucial meetings notes and speeches of the PM that speak a lot about the extremely exciting times and makes the reading very interesting almost to the point of thrilling at times.

This has too much of Jairam Ramesh, and too little of Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. One learns nothing of IMF's role in the historic and quite revolutionary policy changes that were put in place in 1991.
