Built mostly during the first quarter of the 20th century, bungalows have been experiencing a kind of renaissance amongst today's homeowners-especially the first-timers. In this celebration of the architectural form, Maddex (American Bungalow Style) visits 75 bungalows throughout the country, including L.A., Seattle, Chicago and D.C. Hers is a warmly told history, which guides the reader from neighborhood to neighborhood and introduces them to the bungalow's many architectural styles-from Federal to Arts & Craft to Spanish. She explains that bungalows were originally "designed for California's outdoor lifestyle," but eventually, "Sears, Montgomery Ward, Aladdin, Gordon Van-Tine, Lewis Homes and others all made bungalows a mainstay among their ready-to-assemble houses." In subsequent chapters, she explores the better-known bungalow architects, such as California's Ellsworth Storey and Seattle's Willatsen and Byrne. Beautiful photos by Vertikoff enable the reader to fully experience the quaint charm of the bungalow exterior, and the warmth of the its wood-detailed interiors and light-filled kitchen nooks.

Diane Maddex, formerly the director of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Preservation Press, is the president of Archetype Press and the author of numerous award-winning books on the American home. Maddex resides in Fenwick Island, Delaware. Alexander Vertikoff's award-winning photographs have been the basis for numerous books. He is a regular contributor to American Bungalow magazine. Vertikoff resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

truly lovely homage to the American bungalow

Bungalow Nation is a truly sumptuous and detailed look at American bungalows.With color pictures on every page, this book is a wonderful balance of text and graphics. The author's text and the photographs by Alexander Vertikoff together present a well-rounded introduction to bungalow style through brief looks at over 75 specific examples of bungalow architecture.

In a chapter called "In The Land Of The Bungalow" the book starts with a brief history of the origins and growth of the architectural style and its place in American history. This chapter is followed by brief treatments of specific aspects of bungalow style: the outside, porches, the inside, fireplaces, built-ins, and furnishings.

Then the author and photographer take us to five different cities to look at examples of bungalows in each. Sample bungalows in Los Angeles, Seattle, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Chicago and Washington DC are highlighted in two to four page spreads. Each house has a description and history of the house and some information on the current owners. This is followed by some photographs of specific features with captions describing each.

The book ends with a bibliography and lists of organizations and architects in each of the five areas highlighted.

This is a lovely book. The bugalows are beautifully photographed. The endpapers are sheet music for the song "In The Land Of the Bungalow" by George F. Devereaux. The cover has a color print of a crewel embroidery of dragonflies. It is a labor of love that is a delight to read and a treat to the eyes. If you love bungalows, this is the book for you.

I got this book because I am planning to remodel the kitchen and bath of my 1930 bungalow and was looking for ways to do so while retaining the original integrity of the house. This book has given me the ideas I need to move forward with confidence.

Love affair with the bungalow

I live in a California Craftsman bungalow and therefore gravitated immediately to this book when I saw it in Builders Booksource in Berkeley, CA. It's absolutely lovely: the story of 75 bungalows in LA, Seattle, Chicago, DC, and Minneapolis. I was surprised that Berkeley wasn't included, but the homes shows epitomize America's love affair with these cozy, well-built structures. Included are features on porches, fireplaces, numerous built-ins, furnishings, landscaping, and interior/exterior decoration. You'll love this book, as I do.

Homes to Emulate

When I bought a 1920's bungalow a year ago, I checked out every arts and crafts and bungalow book I could get my hands on. This one rose to the top. Perhaps I'm a little biased because a good portion of the homes featured in the book are located in the Twin Cities, where I live. But the thing I really like about Bungalow Nation, besides the lovely quality of the photograhps, is that it provides excellent inspiration for the interior decoration of arts and crafts style homes.

If you have a bungalow, or just love the style, you will adore this book.

Don't give your kids this book!!!!

Pros:
- Easy to understand story for kids 8-14 probably
- Sort of vivid imagery that I can imagine the girl in the book and the life she is going through
- Simplifies the everyday happenings of kids

Cons:
- Uses negative words such as nerd, and hippy.
- In my opinion this book promotes bullying and other forms of harassment
- Extremely boring read. You can tell the author kind of threw this one together
- The protagonist tries to be "cool" in her own way by nonchalantly bullying other kids and various other things
- Definitely not a book that I would allow any child to read because of the ideas it promotes

The first few paragraphs of the book state how the main character is not a nerd but she isn't cool. These first few paragraphs show exactly what is wrong in our society by subjecting kids to lower themselves to social classes at such a young age. Kids who enjoy studying or are smart are referred to as nerds. Bully's are simply ignored in this book and there is no attempt to show kids that they need to stand up for themselves. Books like these are exactly what is wrong with America. Everyone wants to be the cool kid and this book shows one girls struggle to become that "cool" kid. I hope you enjoyed my review and I hope it helps you make a decision about this book!

Amazing book for kids

This book was amazing written by an 12 year old that did her experiences. nicknames from parents, school day and about embarrassing issues. This is pretty good for other children to read and learn possible lessons. My 9 yr old granddaughter loves this book and is at her 3rd time reading it. I hope all children could read this book. I would recommend this book to kids.

Diary of a almost...not, cool girl!

Almost cool Maddi is not much a nerd and not the coolest girl at school. She loves to give nicknames...like Mr Facebook and the others... she seems happy and energetic.
But now, she is clumsy and unstable and even Mrs Absolutely Positive (her Mom) can't stop that! And Mom, a health food freaky hippy, is volunteering at the the canteen!
Watch out as she deals with Star, MG and even Justin (Dustbin)!
And can she stop being unstable so that she doesn't do anything too bad...you know, like SMOKY dustbin?
Oops...did I say too much?
All in all, very good book.
Perfect! I loved it!

This book is a timely contribution to the debate about new tall buildings and their role and effect on our cities.  It is divided into two main parts. In part one, the relationship between tall buildings and planning is outlined, followed by an exploration of the impacts that construction of tall buildings can have. It focuses, in particular, on the conservation debates that proposals for new tall buildings raise. The first part ends with an analysis of the way in which planning strategies have evolved to deal with the unique consequences of tall buildings on their urban locations. The second part of the book focuses on seven examples of medium-sized cities dealing with planning and conservation issues, and implications that arise from tall buildings. These have been chosen to reflect a wide range of methods to either encourage or to control tall buildings that cities are deploying. The case studies come from across the western world, covering England (Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle and Birmingham), Norway (Oslo), Ireland (Dublin) and Canada (Vancouver) and represent a broad spectrum of approaches to dealing with this issue.

In drawing together the experiences of these varied cities, the book contributes to the ongoing debate about the role of the tall building in our cities, their potential impacts, and experiences of those who use and inhabit them.  The conclusions outline how cities should approach the strategic planning of tall buildings, as well as how they should deal with the consequences of individual buildings, particularly on the built heritage.

Short is a qualified planner (MRTPI) and conservation officer (IHBC) with a BSc (Hons) in Town and Regional Planning from the University of Dundee, an MA in Heritage Management from Sheffield Hallam University, and a PhD in Urban Planning and Conservation from the University of Manchester. Michael currently works as Senior Lecturer in Urban Planning and Conservation at the University of the West of England in Bristol.
