An excellent reference work on ayurvedic herbal revitalization therapy

The word 'Rasayana' lterally means “the path that rasa takes” (rasa - referring to the primordial tissue - plasma), and ayana - (path). It is considered as the science of the restoration of youth and relief of the suffering and degradation that accompanies aging and bestows longevity. It is believed in ayurveda that the qualities of rasa dhatu influence the health of all the other dhatus of the body; hence, any medicine that enhances the quality of rasa is a a Rasayana. Rasayana tantra, the study and teaching of rejuvenation medicine, has long been a traditionally independent clinical discipline within ayurveda.

Rasayana (rejuvenation or revitalization therapy) one of the historic eight specializations within traditional ayurvedic practice, although this least understood branch of this science, is becoming of ever growing interest.

Until relatively recently, much of the information on India's research into their medicinal plants has remained within India, mainly published within Indian journals. Over the past few decades, however, as interest in the field of ayurveda has expanded globally, and with the integration of herbal. herbomineral and metallic medicines discovered and long used abroad into convention treatments, and along with the strengthening of academic networks internationally, the results of Indian herbal drug research is both becoming available to Western audiences as well as stirring Western inquiries into the properties of these medicines.

Looking at it from Westerrn perspective, a Rasayana medicine is one that may be said to have five properties: viz., its actions as an adaptogen, an immunostimulant, an immunomodulator, a pro-host probiotic and an anti-mutagenic. To which we might add a sixth quality, that of tropism: an attraction toward a particular tissue, organ or organ system.

Altogether this is a very good book on ayurvedic herbal medicine and required reading on the subject of herbs and the promotion of longevity.

I’m a bit torn on how to review this novella. There are parts of it that I enjoyed and parts of it that annoyed me. Having read the book’s blurb, I knew that this was an M/M twincest book, so obviously that aspect of the storyline wasn’t an issue. I actually enjoyed the relationship dynamic between Tristan and Thad – both the glimpses into their past as teens who couldn’t get along and their current arrangement which forced them to either live together for a year or lose their family home. That’s not even taking into account the taboo aspect of their relationship as the story progresses – which I am not ashamed to admit was hotter than I expected it to be.

However, what annoyed me was WHERE the taboo liaison occurred once Tristan and Thad were on the same page. While I did not grow up in the Louisiana bayous, I did grow up in the Florida Panhandle – literally right next to a swamp that had a gator or two (or more depending upon the water levels in the river) and on more than one occasion did a 180 to walk right back into the house because there was a gator sunning at the end of the road. With that in mind, I found the scene in which the gator attacked to be annoying because it’s not characteristic behavior of the reptile. Yet I gave the author leeway for artistic license as the scene was written with a very effective suspenseful air to it and I suspect a lot of readers won’t find fault with the scene because they didn’t grow up “aware” of gators in the same way. BUT, and that’s a big but, the idea that the twins would then flee to safety, away from the water, only to embark upon their twincest relationship while still in the swamp was a bit too much for me to swallow. No. Just no. You don’t have sex in the swamp immediately after surviving a gator attack, especially out in the open where ANYONE can walk up on you…having sex with your twin brother. Heck, you don’t have sex in the swamp, period – snakes, bugs, turtles, spiders, and other creepy crawlies make it one of the most unattractive places to have sex I can imagine, especially on the ground. Granted, the sex scene is hot, but I just couldn’t get past the location, especially as they could very easily have finished walking home and gotten down to business in a much safer environment.

Despite that, the rest of Forbidden Secrets was well-written and I enjoyed it. Lace does a nice job of giving enough background that you can feel the tension in the relationship between the twins in the beginning, and then unfolds the story in such a way that the shift in their feelings and attitudes toward each other is believable. That’s not to say that I believe twincest is a commonly occurring phenomenon in our society, but rather that I began this novella expecting it to occur and found the way in which the author took Tristan and Thad from estranged siblings to bed partners believable. As this is the first installment in the series, the question becomes – will I read the next book in the series? Honestly I don’t know. With Forbidden Secrets being my first twincest read, I don’t know how it compares to others in the genre. While I’m not dying to read the sequel, I did enjoy the writing style and would be interested in seeing where the author takes the guys as long as my schedule allows.

Forbidden Secrets is the second Liberty Lace book I’ve read. I’m always on the lookout for new twincest erotica, so this short story was right up my alley! However, while I enjoyed it, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did the last Liberty Lace story I read, When a Twin Peeks, now titled The Hush-Hush Crush.

Unlike in When a Twin Peeks, I just didn’t connect with these characters. They felt very juvenile and needed a good slap upside the head. Why? They needed to grow up and start acting like adults and talk to each other, instead of just pretending the other didn’t exist.

I wanted to smack the parents upside the head as well. They knew there was a problem with their sons and yet did nothing. It wasn’t until after the parents died that they forced the two to work out their differences by denying them their inheritance unless they lived together for a year. What kind of parenting is that? Instead of jetting off on vacation, they should’ve been smacking some sense into their kids.

However, the book wasn’t a complete wash. It was decently written. There were some typos and sentences that could’ve been tightened up, but nothing major. There was room for improvement but nothing that really pulled me out of the book or anything.

The one thing I did like was some of the characterization on Tristan. The author managed to create a fairly feminine character without making him a stereotype or caricature. I’d have liked to see more of him to see just who he really is.

We’re not given enough time with Thad for him to be fleshed out. There’s a few little hints dropped, but nothing that truly gives us insight into the character. With a bit more time, and a bit longer word count, she could’ve really fleshed out two good characters.

Not my favorite book, but I’ll still be keeping an eye on Liberty Lace. If you like twincest, I’d suggest giving this one a shot. I doubt you’ll be too disappointed!

I’ve become a big fan of Liberty Lace. Not just because this author pushes the bounders of my comfort zone, which at first these type books did, but not anymore. But because in just a few page count we get an amazing detail of the lives, sights, sounds of what the story is talking about.

In this one, we have twin brothers that took different paths but found themselves thrown together by a will and possibly by something even greater than both of them could ever imagine.

I just loved the secondary charter in this one, she really brought the story around and made us believe. The brothers of course played well off each other, the way he knew but didn’t want to believe he was given a second chance.

This book shows that although there are particular aspects of the theory of evolution which remain controversial, and issues still to be settled, there can no longer be any doubt that the basis of the theory is true. It examines the consequences for our view of human nature, religion, and non-human animals. John Dupré then investigates the appropriation of evolutionary biology by psychologists, and argues that their claims are largely spurious: despite its status as one of the most important scientific ideas of all time, the theory of evolution has very little to tell us about the details of human nature and human behavior.

John A. Dupré is Professor of Philosophy of Science & Director of the ESRC Centre for Genomics in Society at the University of Exeter. He lectures extensively in the U.K., North America, and Europe. A refreshing view at "evolutionary psychology"

John Dupre is a notoriously non-orthodox philosopher of biology. In this latest book of his, he takes a stand against "evolutionary psychology", a fashionable doctrine that claims to explain contemporary human behavior based on pseudo-Darwinian arguments.

If the theory of evolution is now widely accepted, a number of issues remain unsolved: Is natural selection by itself sufficient for understanding evolution? Which parameters are optimized to achieve greater fitness? And what exactly is selected? Is it the single gene, as Richard Dawkins suggested in his influential book, The Selfish Gene? Is it the organism? The group? The species? Dupre believes that it is actually the entire developmental cycle. In other words, the unit of selection is "the ability to gather together and deploy the full set of resources necessary for producing the next generation". This theory is called developmental systems theory (DST), and it reconciles evolution (at the scale of the species) with development (at the individual scale).

Dupre then brings us one step farther: In the case of humans at least, evolution is not only genetic but also cultural. There is an evolutionary continuity of humans and other animals, but language (that Dupre calls "the most significant distinctively human feature") gives us the ability to develop complex thought and elaborate cultures. Our genome is probably Stone Age-old, but our cultural environment has considerably changed over the history of mankind and has an impact on contemporary humans that is hard to ignore. Without claiming, like Steven Pinker for example, that biology is entirely non-relevant and that only culture shapes an individual's mind (in the so-called "blank state" theory), Dupre believes that the cultural context tells us at least as much about human nature as does the genome. Evolutionary psychologists, on the other hand, choose to focus on humans' "structure" and to neglect their "context" (Dupre uses the words structure/context to avoid the controversial nature/nurture terms, which may or may not be a good thing).

The confounding fact, as very nicely demonstrated in Chapter 6, is the lack of evidence for evolutionary psychology. "The evolutionary psychologist is typically advancing a thesis about human nature at the same time as offering an explanation of the trait hypothesized" (page 89). Moreover, the analogies from humans to other animals are often arbitrary, not based on any verifiable evolutionary process, while conveniently overlooking counterexamples that would be no less relevant. The link to genetics is even weaker, if not completely speculative: Genetics should only be used to explain phenomena that are largely insensitive to environmental contingencies. Its misuse is prone to harmful misconceptions about our species.

Dupre reminds us that evolutionary psychology rose from the ash of sociobiology, decidedly inappropriate since E. O. Wilson's disreputable book (Sociobiology: The New Synthesis, 1975) and the ensuing accusations of racism, sexism and generally bad science. The same pitfalls await evolutionary psychologists when they claim that all men have a "natural" disposition to rape, for instance. I believe that the same goes with the "Men are from Mars, women are from Venus" frenzy. An important conclusion is that we are, so to speak, more "free" than evolutionary psychologists would like us to believe: "Biological explanations of social facts are frequently interpreted as having conservative implications. If it's part of our biology, the thought goes, we might as well just learn to live with it. No such implication is necessary, however" (page 115).

Overall, Darwin's Legacy is a great reading for anyone interested in mankind, or simply curious about the (lack of) scientific grounds for evolutionary psychology. I would give the book five stars if not for the following weak points: Dupre tends to repeat himself or to restate his previous books. He is probably right to be so skeptical towards reductionism, but his case was already made in his first book (The Disorder of Things: Metaphysical Foundations of the Disunity of Science). I was also unhappy with Chapter 4, a curious incursion into the debate of science (specifically, the theory of evolution) and religion. Although I find myself to agree with Dupre's "anti-supernaturalistic" (!) perspective, I was disappointed at his oversimplistic account of that famously complex issue. Even more disturbing is the fact that Dupre does not mention any other religion than Christianity, which makes his arguments even weaker. Let's hope he elaborates on evolution and religion(s) in a future publication.

Update on evolution - critical, anti-design, atheist ...

Did you read Dawkins's "The Selfish Gene" and "The Blind Watchmaker" with some enthusiasm? Have sociobiological plausibilities become a part of your world view? Be prepared to revise some of your ideas. Dupré lines up against a gene-centred shortening of evolutionary theory. He advocates things like multi-level selection and especially developmental systems theory ("...the smallest unit in terms of which evolutionary process can be properly understood is the full developmental cycle from one stage of the life cycle through all the intervening stages needed to reproduce that stage in the next generation ..." "... the genome is merely one developmental resource - no doubt a very important one ...", p. 86). But that's not all: the author is well aware of the importance cultural development has for human behaviour. "Victorian country gentry almost surely engaged in less sexual activity than, say, contemporary british holiday-makers in Ibiza, and not because of any difference in their genes." (p. 116) Whether in biology or in philosophy Dupré is an unerring critic of the "Zeitgeist". No wonder that he doesn't have any sympathy for the contemporary appeasement strategy for reconciling science and religion which is derived from the so-called Argument from Design and has become a whole intelligent-design movement. In his chapter on "Human Origines and the Decline of Theism" Dupré leaves no doubt that he wants "to claim that whatever Darwin's goals, and whatever his contemporaries may have made of his ideas, the growth of evolutionary theory that he launched has provided a fatal injury to the pretensions of religion." (p. 41/42) But even if you are not inclined to naturalism: read the book, at least as a biological layman it will at once complicate and clarify your ideas about evolution and perhaps provoke further reading (appropriate hints at the end of the book).

At last! TAB for learning classical guitar! And you can play without fingernails!

Paul Henry's is the book that has most encouraged me to start learning, above all for revealing that yes, you CAN play classical guitar without nails...With that (medical!) roadblock out of the way it seemed easy to slip into the earliest stages of study using this book, and the new TAB edition sure helps smooth things along.

I found the selection of pieces the book is based around appealing, too. And the audio download instead of CD is very convenient.

P.S. The 'nails' revelation (which comes quietly in the appendix) excited me enough to go searching for sheet music of pieces I am yearning to play, and the attraction of renaissance Scottish lute music led me on to find the two 'Scottish Guitar' books of nail-less proponent Rob MacKillop. I know I'm being reckless, but I'm also going to try and graft his interesting ideas about right hand fingering onto Paul Henry's method. MacKillop also gives useful tips on nail-less technique in his books, and he has a couple of YouTube videos on technique which I find essential. Another revelation through this connection is that Fernando Sor, whose work is a pillar of classical guitar education, played without nails and used this different, actually more naturalistic, right hand fingering. And - gasp! - even Tarrega himself abandoned nails around 1902.

P.P.S. It's Rob MacKillop's first Scottish book (without the CD) that has the most information. There's a big introduction written for beginners who just want to 'jump in'. (His second book has a bit more to say on technique, and has a wider range of difficulty in its selection than the uniformly intermediate level of the first book.) Actually he has more precise instructions - and exercises! - on basic hand placement and fingering technique, for both hands, than any other book I've seen (every piece is fully annotated with his recommended right-hand fingering, for example). So MY unique method is to graft Paul Henry's progressive study onto Rob MacKillop's foundation. The point is that this right hand fingering, whatever it may cost in technical prowess, does make it easier to achieve a singing style of playing. It also saves years of rigorous training devoted to levelling out the different strengths natural to each finger. And spare years are in short supply...

P.P.P.S. Having worked through Paul Henry's book, without delaying over every detail of musicianship, the best thing I found to do was go straight to Ben Bolt's two volumes of progressively arranged classical solos. It feels good so far as an all-round technique builder, and I intend changing it up with my other sources. What I'm looking for now is a simple, practical and short introduction to harmony, improvisation, and ornamentation. Many of the renaissance and baroque pieces I'm interested in come in a bare bones form, and often seem to cry out for expanded treatment.

This is the best beginning classical method book I've seen. It's very systematic, going thru all the aspects of music notation while learning the notes in first position at the same time. It doesn't push too fast, but at a pace anyone can handle, especially with the tab. It has selections from some of the great guitar composers, so in a surprisingly short time, you are actually playing real classical guitar pieces. The page layouts are pleasing and add to the accessibility of the lessons. There is, however, one suggestion I would make when someone buys this; and that is have it rebound with a spiral binding. This will allow the book to lay flat on any surface. I took mine to a Fed Ex Kinko's and for about five dollars they did a great job. Hope this helps.
