From Publishers Weekly
The authors trace the career of Buddy Holly, the West Texas rock 'n' roller in great detailhis youth in Lubbock, early performances, the formation of his group the Crickets, the fame that followed the hit song "That'll Be the Day" (based on a line spoken by John Wayne in The Searchers) and the plane crash that killed him in 1959. Holly's "hold on his fans is to be explained by his very humanity," the authors maintain, and, appropriately, they take pains to separate fact from legend. The book concludes with a look at the current "Holly Renaissance." A superb collection of 160 illustrations (photos, maps, clippings, ads, etc.) is spoiled in part because they are reproduced in miniature to fit within the pages' outer margins. Nevertheless, this is indeed the "definitive biography," based on years of obsessive research, including 22,000 miles on the road logged by Goldrosen while interviewing friends and acquaintances of Holly. Complete discography.

From Library Journal
Remembering Buddy updates Goldrosen's excellent Buddy Holly: his life and music. It explores Holly's early years in Lubbock, Texas; his rise to prominence; the chart successes with the Crickets in 1957 and 1958 ("Peggy Sue," etc.; and his death in a 1959 plane crash. It also details the resurgence of interest in Holly which began during the 1970s. Well-written and exhaustively researched, the book includes hundreds of rare and interesting photos and a complete discography chart file and list of tour dates. One of the best rock biographies. Review
"Exemplary." -- Robert Palmer, New York Times

"Superb." -- Greil Marcus, Village Voice

"The best rock biography that's ever been written." -- Dave Marsh, Rolling Stone

Remembering Buddy is the definitive biography of Buddy Holly, written with the co-operation of Holly's family and friends and hist musical and business colleagues. In consummate detail, Remembering Buddy traces Holly's life from his birth in Lubbock, Texas, in 1936, to his tragic plane crash 23 years later. Buddy Holly was a rock pioneer who wrote his own material, led his own group, and recorded a catalogue of classic songs. He influenced everyone from The Beatles and Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello. Though Holly's career was brief, world-wide sales of his records run into many millions and his birthday is still celebrated world-wide. Remembering Buddy contains a wealth of information for Holly fans, and will introduce the man behind the music that is continually to be found on "goldie oldie" stations around the country and around the world. -- Midwest Book Review

Rave On!
By JMAC
This is, hands down, the best biography of Buddy Holly available. I have read them all and though others have their moments (mainly rare photos) they are spoiled with proven factual errors and unsubstantiated rumors. John Goldrosen's book is the standard by which all others are judged.

Goldrosen is a stickler for accuracy and his research is meticulous. He also keeps close to all things Buddy Holly. I first met him at the dedication of the Buddy Holly statue in Lubbock in 1986. Bill Griggs (founder of the sadly discontinued Buddy Holly Memorical Society) thinks highly of Goldrosen and there is no higher compliment for a historian of Buddy Holly.

The updates keep making the book better (and more accurate) but I will always keep my first copy which I've had signed by Buddy's parents, his brothers, Jerry Allison, Niki Sullivan, Joe Mauldin, and, of course, the author John Goldrosen. If you only read one biography of Buddy Holly, this should be the one. If you have read others and would like to know what Buddy was really like, get the latest edition of this book. You will not be disappointed.

Update 2005: Sad to note that this book is out of print. So is the earlier version titled "The Buddy Holly Story" by the same authors. It's still worth reading if you can find a copy. Check your local library or used book store. Hopefully another publisher will pick up the book and it will be available again.

The best biography of Buddy...and best balanced...
By William E. Adams
I've been a fan of Buddy's since he was still alive. This is the best biography available. The authors do not deal in sensationalism and wacko explorations of Buddy's sex life or possible contributions to the crash of the plane. He died at 22, and was only famous for two years, and never was wealthy. He can be expected to have had moments of immaturity, and to have made mistakes in judgement. But the overwhelming evidence is that he was a nice, normal young adult with abnormal talent for singing, songwriting, guitar-playing and record-producing. He's been gone for more than 40 years, and he left about 80 recordings behind. Those performances are still wonderful, and this book tells you a lot about how they were created and captured and preserved. Who needs anything else?

Still the definitive Buddy Holly biography
By A Customer
This is a detailed and complete biography of Buddy Holly's life and career. It is accurate and has a good index. The more recent Ellis Amburn biography has an impressive bibliography, but unfortunately numerous errors have been found in it. This makes the Amburn book useless as a reference as the reader cannot trust it. Not so with the Goldrosen and Beecher book: it is accurate and is still the definitive reference for Buddy Holly fans. I strongly recommend the Goldrosen and Beecher book over the other more recent biographies for its completeness, accuracy and ease of use. If you want to own only one book about Buddy Holly, this is the one to get.

What do Buddhism and Islam have in common? And what positive characteristics might Buddhist Japan and Muslim Indonesia be able to offer one another? In this thoughtful and wide-ranging discussion, distinguished representatives from each country demonstrate that meaningful dialogue between religions and cultures begins with a one-to-one conversation between individuals. Addressing the similarities of their nations as island peoples, with a shared history of trade and cultural exchange, Abdurrahman Wahid and Daisaku Ikeda agree that the aim of dialogue, like that of Buddhism and Islam alike, is fundamentally the goal of peace. Both thinkers draw on their respective traditions, and especially the lives of the Buddha and the Prophet Muhammad, to show that harmony springs from an attitude of tolerance and non-violence, which is where true courage resides. Whether masterfully expounding the teachings of Nichiren, or indicating that a true understanding of jihad is not about religious war but about communicating the truth of Allah, the discussants mutually transform our understandings of value, pluralism and amity.

The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon: A Novel, by Tom Spanbauer

Set against the harsh reality of an unforgiving landscape and culture, The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon provides a vision of the Old West unlike anything seen before. The narrator, Shed, is one of the most memorable characters in contemporary fiction: a half-Indian bisexual boy who lives and works at the Indian Head Hotel in the tiny town of Excellent, Idaho. It's the turn of the century, and the hotel carries on a prosperous business as the town's brothel. The eccentric characters working in the hotel provide Shed with a surrogate family, yet he finds in himself a growing need to learn the meaning of his Indian name, Duivichi-un-Dua, given to him by his mother, who was murdered when he was twelve. Setting off alone across the haunting plains, Shed goes in search of an identity among his true people, encountering a rich pageant of extraordinary characters along the way. Although he learns a great deal about the mysteries and traditions of his Indian heritage, it is not until Shed returns to Excellent and witnesses a series of brutal tragedies that he attains the wisdom that infuses this exceptional and captivating book.

From Publishers Weekly
Haunting and earthy, this deeply felt tale of love and loss is told by Shed, a half-breed bisexual Indian. In the 1880s, Shed, only a boy, is raped at gunpoint by the man who then murders his mother; he is then raised by Ida Richilieu--prostitute, mayor of Excellent, Idaho, proprietress of a hotel/whorehouse painted pink. Under Ida's tutelage, Shed becomes a berdache , or holy male prostitute, and makes love to resident hooker Alma Hatch, a former Bible saleswoman. Leaving home to seek the meaning of his Indian name, he becomes friend and lover of Montana rancher Dellwood Barker, who converses with the moon and may well be his father. Returning to Idaho, the two men join Ida and Alma in an odd extended family involving various sexual liaisons. Then the four black Wisdom brothers come to town: after Ida defends them against racist Mormons, ensuing events cause Dellwood to lose his marbles, Ida to lose her legs and Shed to lose his innocence as he discovers his true identity. Spanbauer ( Far Away Places ) fuses raunchy dialogue, pathos, local color, heartbreak and a serious investigation of racism in this stunning narrative.

From Library Journal
Spanbauer's second novel (the first was Faraway Places, Putnam, 1988) is the bittersweet story of a boy growing up with hard-drinking whores and assorted misfits at the end of Idaho's gold rush. Although his real name is Duivichi-un-Dua, he is also known as Shed. At times, Shed isn't sure who is crazier: the God-fearing citizens of his hometown Excellent, or his adopted family of whores and their admirers at the Indian Head Hotel. Other times, being half Indian, half white, and bisexual makes Shed crazy too. But Shed has a special strength he calls "killdeer," his own code of trust and self-preservation. Crazy or not, Shed tells what he calls his "human-being story" in a true and honest voice. Spanbauer's masterful plot is delightfully unpredictable and compelling. However, some readers may be offended by the unbridled sexuality of his characters. Recommended for large fiction collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
Gender and racial lines are bent out of shape in this tale of turn-of-the-century Idaho spun by a youth who is part Indian, not quite wholly homosexual, and in the grip of a powerful imagination. Spanbauer (Faraway Places, 1988) creates a pansexual West that John Wayne wouldn't have recognized. The narrator, brought up in an earthy but idealized whorehouse in the small town of Excellent, is called ``Shed,'' because it's out in the shed where he turns his tricks--from about age 12 on--after his full-blooded-Indian mother is murdered. He also has the Indian name of Duivichi-un-Dua, the meaning of which he seeks to discover. He feels some kinship to the Berdache, male Indians who lived as women before the uptight whites put a stop to it. In Excellent, the enemies of erotic and other pleasures are the patriarchal Mormons, who are pictured as rabidly racist as well. Meanwhile, the narrative voice, at its worst, is false naive; at its best, strong and vivid, creating an oddly convincing world as seen by someone on locoweed and whiskey. Shed forms a family with Ida Richelieu, the whorehouse proprietor and a whore herself; Alma Hatch, Ida's colleague and bedmate; and cowboy Dellwood Barker, who may be Shed's father but is most certainly his lover. Freud would have had a field day. The 384 pages offer plenty of plot twists, humor, graphic but not prurient sex, didacticisms, some magic realism (North American-style) and a consistent view of life that might be termed ``rebellious romanticism'' for the 1990's. A different view of the West where the bisexuals and prostitutes wear the white hats, gender is up for grabs, and every permutation of love will have its way. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Loved it!
By Candi Sary
"The Man Who Fell In Love With The Moon" is like no other book I've ever read. Spanbauer is a fabulous storyteller! He does something magical on the pages as he brings his characters and scenes to life. The book's unique perspective of the Old West is fascinating. Yes, his characters are flawed and sometimes behave in ways that made me uncomfortable, but that's part of what makes the book so interesting. I read a review where the reader gave the book a low rating in part because she thought the mother was such a terrible person. I love when fiction offers "terrible people" and presents their stories so thoroughly that we might understand why they did what they did. I love a true exploration of human nature, not a safe, ideal presentation. Spanbauer doesn't hold back with his characters. He shows the ugly, the beautiful, the unspoken and the outrageous, creating a story so raw and honest, it's hard not to get caught up in his bizarre world. I opened my mind, stepped outside of myself, and just took in the experience. Every day I looked forward to picking up the book as I had no idea what to expect next! This is a most memorable and thought-provoking read.

Brilliant language, images, characters, caughtt in psychic whirl
By John B. Hills
The novel took and held my attention throughout. The language is bold, the images arresting (native Americans eviscerated in reservation ghetto; bacchanalian couplings of a boy with old men, old women; ordinary folk & LDS "at war"; elusive berdache mysticism). The tale is of an Idaho frontier world made up of extraordinary characters, brought through rousing adventures to bizarre, open-ended "transition", rather than to "death". Mind-altering drugs have both a destructive and a beneficial role in the lives of the characters. Toward the end of the novel, everyday plausibility seemed remote to this reader. A book for the open minded and forbearing, for those with a sense of humor. The author's more recent, "Now is the Hour", reveals more fully his gifted, original and haunting way with words and imagery, his insight into human nature, his control of sub-plots and total narrative. "Now is the Hour" also significantly sets forth the inherent worth of gayness. Characters not easily forgotten, truths not to be ignored make this reader hope that the writer will weave another fabric from these sorts of threads.

Great journey that stretches the imagination!
By Maurice Williams
Wow, what an incredibly trippy ride through the Wild West! Set primarily in the gold mining town of Excellent, Idaho during the early 1900's, this novel is filled with adventure and history, magic and adventure, love and debauchery, philosophy and religion. "The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon" is one of the more creatively imagined novels that I've come across recently. At its core is the coming of age story of the main character and narrator Shed, whose quest for a fuller understanding of self leads him on an odyssey that ends, as many do, exactly where it started. In the telling of this story, Spanbauer reinforces the idea that it's rarely the destination but the journey that transforms. Populated with characters both loveable and detestable the novel intertwines each character's story in a way that allows for an exploration of Native American beliefs, frontier values and the human debris that results when the two collide.

It's also a story about the importance of stories; "You can't stop people from talking" - explains Ida, the novel's heroine - "They talk and pretty soon you got a story, and what's a human being without a story?" "The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon" is not for the faint of heart. It can be seen as modern day ribald in the tradition of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales or an insightful philosophical debate on the nature of the human soul, or both. Vices and virtues intersect in this novel in ways that are at once shocking and enlightening. So get ready for a wild ride on this airship in route to a visit with the man in the moon. These are stories that are comforting and unsettling, familiar and eye opening. But, "you got to consider the source", cautions Ida, "a story about a crazy man, told by crazy people should only make you wonder." Kudos to Spanbauer for superb execution and many thanks to Dave M. for this recommendation. Enjoy!

Shadow Government: Surveillance, Secret Wars, and a Global Security State in a Single-Superpower World, by Tom Engelhardt

In 1964, a book entitled The Invisible Government shocked Americans with its revelations of a growing world of intelligence agencies playing fast and loose around the planet, a secret government lodged inside the one they knew that even the president didn't fully control. Almost half a century later, everything about that "invisible government" has grown vastly larger, more disturbing, and far more visible. In his new book, Tom Engelhardt takes in something new under the sun: what is no longer, as in the 1960s, a national security state, but a global security one, fighting secret wars that have turned the president into an assassin-in-chief. Shadow Government offers a powerful survey of a democracy of the wealthy that your grandparents wouldn't have recognized.

Responsible and Compelling -- Avoids Some of the Darkest Facts
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
A more timely relevant book for US citizens could not be imagined, at least by me. By the sheerest coincidence, I have also recently read two books that in my view form a tri-fecta of perspective that could help launch an abolishment of the present government of the USA, a two-party tyranny in service to the legalized crime families of Wall Street.

Micah Sifry: The Big Disconnect: Why The Internet Hasn't Transformed Politics (Yet)
Darrell West: Billionaires: Reflections on the Upper Crust

I won't repeat my summary reviews of those two books, here I will only say that while Tom Engelhardt is ably laying out the criminal insanity of what we have now in the way of a secret government that has become a "lockdown state" toxic to all forms of life everywhere, Micah has documented why the progressive and activist civil movements are dead in the water without a clue, and Darrell has documented how there are at least 25 billionaires out there who want to get it right but have no one to work with.

I am a former spy and the most published intelligence reformer in the English language -- and also the top Amazon reviewer for non-fiction, with Amazon reviews of over 300 books on the secret state, and many books on democracy, corruption, etcetera all easily accessed via the Reviews page at Phi Beta Iota the Public Intelligence Blog -- all my reviews add weight to this one book, which could serve as the spark that ignites a revolutionary fire in America.

Phrases from this book that jump out at me include, in addition to lockdown state and post-legal America, imperial power, conspiracy of stupidity, destabilization machine, thug state, and predator nation. The author provides an entire chapter that addresses how once clear terms have been turned on their heads by the Orwellian state -- love is hate, war is peace.

This is a book that is patriotic in the extreme, and will be considered treasonous by the fundamentalist loons who have the financial, ideological, and religious power to get through the November 2014 elections without any losses -- who is elected does not matter, because in a two-party tyranny (see Theresa Amato's Grand Illusion: The Myth of Voter Choice in a Two-Party Tyranny the other six parties (Constitution, Green, Libertarian, Natural Law, Reform, Socialist) and all Independents are SHUT OUT. We are re-electing shills -- traitors.

As a fan of William Greider (see for instance The Soul of Capitalism: Opening Paths to a Moral Economy and Chuck Spinney Defense Facts of Life: The Plans/Reality Mismatch, among many others I have reviewed here at Amazon, what I found most compelling about this book was the authors clarity and integrity in telling the truth about the US military-intelligence complex: the most expensive global capability for doing unintended harm while failing to accomplish any mission actually in the public interest. The author cannot be faulted on his logic or his details.

As fearfully negative as this book is about the present state of affairs, it pulls some punches, perhaps deliberately, perhaps because the author has not delved into these with the constant attention that I and others have devoted to them.

9/11. Allowed to happen. 13 countries warned us in advance, Dick Cheney scheduled the national counter-terrorism exercise for 9/11 months in advance, the investigation was a whitewash, an independent investigation as recommended by Richard Gage and Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth is still needed. 9/11 was a crime against humanity enabled by George Tenet then Director of Central Intelligence and Colin Powell then Secretary of Defense, the two people who should have had the integrity to stop Cheney is his tracks. This book cannot be fully appreciated without understanding that 9/11 was the coup moment. This was the JFK assassination on steroids, completing the capture of the US Government that started back then. Among many many books on the perfect storm that destroyed the US Constitution, see Vice: Dick Cheney and the Hijacking of the American Presidency (my review lists over 20 acts of treason by Cheney documented in the book) and A Pretext for War: 9/11, Iraq, and the Abuse of America's Intelligence Agencies.

Academic, Civil Society, and Media Meltdown. The author naturally focuses on the facts of the national security state, with two books prominently cited (while many others are not): The Invisible Government and Top Secret America: The Rise of the New American Security State. The other half of the story is that of the failure of all checks and balances. The national security state would not be possible if Justice Powell and the US Chamber of Commerce had not spent the last 25 years subverting the US legal system and ultimately capturing the US Supreme Court, where CITIZENS UNITED should have led to millions demanding the abject resignations of the failed Justices. It would not have happened with decades of failure in education, labor, religion, and the media. I still believe in America the Beautiful and the common sense of the average American, but until we break the country of its addition to drugs and toxic food that scrambles brains, we will continue to be a nation of serfs.

False Flag & Studied Incompetence. The national security state has, as the author documents so well, taken on a life of its own, but he is reluctant, it seems, to actually lay down the gauntlet on how false flag operations are used by the FBI and others to create a climate of fear. "False flag" is not in the index. From the FBI trying to give a retarded Muslim kid $3000 to move out of his mother's home and create a terrorist cell to Department of Homeland Security "exercises" passed off as real attacks, we have a massive lack of integrity in the US Government. Add to this the studied incompetence of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommending the N-95 mask that stops .3 micron threats when Ebola is a .08 micron threat -- and the ten months we have wasted because neither the White House nor the US intelligence community are competent at "whole" governance, and you have a government that is both toxic and incompetent.

Contractors and Loss of Ethics. I respect the focus on the book and the impossibility of pulling everything into it, but one area that I felt could have been integrated more thoroughly is that of contractors who now take up to 70% of the budget and provide 70% or more of the manning, all of whom are not US Government employees, not public servants, in constant conflict of interest, and generally lacking in ethics (as are their government counterparts, but the contracting world takes irresponsibility to another level).

Although the author strives to end on a positive note, lauding the golden era of journalism and the "rise of the reader," I don't buy it. I am equally optimistic about the future, but there is a great deal more blood, sweat, and tears to be extracted from the public before we have our Tunesian fruit seller precipitant moment, and the Republic explodes to demand Electoral Reform, a Balanced Budget, a Coalition Cabinet, and the Automated Payment Transaction Tax along with the abolition of the Internal Revenue Service (advisory: the tax code is how Congress blackmails big industries into paying into their political action funds -- currency and stock transactions are not taxed). For more information visit We the People Reform Coalition.

Tom Englehardt is a story-teller with credibility among tens of millions of US citizens if not a full hundred million. He has rendered a national service with this book, but I put the book down somewhat distressed because Micah's book is the other half of the story and no one wants to listen to Micah -- while at the same time, we have Lady Lynn Rothschild (from New Jersey no less), the Mars Family, and the "black sheep billionaires" of Europe and the West Coast all looking to fund a major impact investment that gets us out of our self-induced global depression, and none of them have a focal point such as I and a few others have been trying to provide.

So five stars for a story well-told that will reach millions -- but not quite a six-star special (my top ten percent) because there is no "next step," no call to arms, no aha moment in this book. It confirms our worst fears. It does not illuminate the path toward a restoration of governance of, by, and for We the People.

There are so many books I would recommend but I have only one link left, so here is my best shot, see my many lists of Amazon reviews for paths to many other authors whom I hold in high regard.

Shadow Facts About Shadow Government
By David Swanson
Tom Engelhardt keeps churning out great books by collecting his posts from TomDispatch.com. His latest book, Shadow Government, is essential reading. Of the ten essays included, eight are on basically the same topic, resulting in some repetition and even some contradiction. But when things that need repeating are repeated this well, one mostly wants other people to read them -- or perhaps to have them involuntarily spoken aloud by everybody's iPhones.

We live in an age in which the most important facts are not seriously disputed and also not seriously known or responded to.

The United States' biggest public program of the past 75 years, now outstripping the rest of the world combined, is war preparations. The routine "base" military spending, not counting spending on particular wars, is at least 10 times the war spending, or enough to totally transform the world for the better. Instead it's used to kill huge numbers of people, to make the United States less safe, and to prepare for wars that are -- without exception -- lost disastrously. Since the justification of the Soviet Union vanished, U.S. militarism has only increased. Its enemies are small, yet it does its best to enlarge them. U.S. Special Operations forces are actively, if "secretly," engaged in war or war preparations in over two-thirds of the nations on earth. U.S. troops are openly stationed in 90 percent of the nations on earth, and 100 percent of the oceans. A majority of the people in most nations on earth consider the United States the greatest threat to world peace.

The U.S. military has brought death, terror, destruction, and lasting damage to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya -- and spilling out of Libya into Mali, sparked a Sunni-Shiite civil war in Iraq that has spread to Syria, rendered Pakistan and Yemen more violent and insecure with drone strikes, and fueled violence in Somalia that has spilled across borders.

These facts are well-established, yet virtually incomprehensible to a typical U.S. news consumer. So, if they can be repeated brilliantly and convincingly, I say: the more times the better.

We're rendering the earth uninhabitable, and the October 27, 2014, issue of Time magazine includes a section headlined "Why the Price of Oil Is Falling -- And What It Means for the World." In reality, of course, it means devastation for the world. In Time it means a happy American oil boom, more sales for Saudi Arabia, and a good reason for Russia to rein in its military. Yes, the same Russia that spends 7% of what the United States does on its military. To get a sense of how Russia could rein in that military, here is a video of a Pentagon official claiming that Russia has physically moved closer to NATO (and put little green men into Ukraine).

Years ago I wrote an article for TomDispatch called "Bush's Third Term." Now of course we're into Bush's fourth term, or Clinton's sixth. The point is that presidential power abuses and war-making expand when a president gets away with them, not when a particular party or individual wins an election. Engelhardt explains how Dick Cheney's 1 percent doctrine (justifying war when anything that has a 1% chance of being a danger) has now become a zero percent doctrine (no justification is needed). Along with war today comes secrecy, which encompasses complete removal of your privacy, but also -- Engelhardt notes -- the abandonment of actual secrecy for "covert" operations that the government wants to have known but not to have held to any legal standard.

The White House went to the New York Times prior to President Obama's reelection and promoted the story that Obama personally goes through a list of men, women, and children on Tuesdays and carefully picks which ones to have murdered. There's no evidence that this hurt Obama's reelection.

The Bush White House went to the New York Times and censored until after Bush's reelection, the story that the government was massively and illegally spying on Americans. The Obama White House has pursued a vendetta against whistleblower Edward Snowden for making public the global extent of the spying. While Engelhardt tells this story with the usual suggestion that Snowden let us in on a big secret, I always assumed the U.S. government was doing what people now know it is. Engelhardt points out that these revelations have moved European and Latin American governments against the U.S. and put the fear of major financial losses into Silicon Valley companies known to be involved in the spying.

Engelhardt writes that with the NSA and gang having eliminated our privacy, we can now eliminate theirs by publicizing leaked information. At the same time, Engelhardt writes that dozens of Snowdens would be needed for us to begin to find out what the U.S. war machine is doing. Perhaps the point is that the dozens of Snowdens are inevitable. I hope so, although Engelhardt explicitly says that the shadow government is an "irreversible way of life." I certainly hope not, or what's the point of opposing it?

Engelhardt notes that the U.S. government has turned against massive ground wars, but not against wars, so that we will be entering an era of "tiny wars." But the tiny wars may kill in significant numbers compared with wars of centuries gone by, and may spark wars by others that rage on indefinitely. Or, I would add, we might choose to stop every war as we stopped the Syrian missile crisis of 2013.

Engelhardt pinpoints a moment when a turning point almost came. On July 15, 1979, President Jimmy Carter proposed a massive investment in renewable energy. The media denounced his speech as "the malaise speech." "In the end, the president's energy proposals were essentially laughed out of the room and ignored for decades." Six months later, on January 23, 1980, Carter announced that "an attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the United States of America, and such an assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including military force." The media took this speech quite seriously and respectfully, labeling it the Carter Doctrine. We've been having increasing trouble with people whose sand lies over our oil ever since.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up Annabel Greene seemingly had everything: cool friends, close family, good grades, and a part-time modeling career in town. But it all came crashing down, and Annabel has spent the summer in shaky, self-imposed exile. She finds herself dreading the new school term and facing, well, everyone again. The last thing she wants to do is revisit old friendships while the losses are painful, the secrets behind the rifts are almost unbearable. Her solid family seems fragile, too. What happened to cause the stiff silences and palpable resentments between her two older sisters? Why is no one in her loving but determinedly cheerful family talking about her middle sister's eating disorder? Annabel's devastating secret is revealed in bits and snatches, as readers see her go to amazing lengths to avoid confrontation. Caught between wanting to protect her family and her own struggles to face a devastating experience, Annabel finds comfort in an unlikely friendship with the school's most notorious loner. Owen has his own issues with anger, but has learned to control it and helps her realize the dangers of holding in her emotions. Dessen explores the interior and exterior lives of her characters and shows their flaws, humanity, struggles, and incremental successes. This is young adult fiction at its best, delving into the minds of complex, believable teens, bringing them to life, and making readers want to know more about them with each turn of the page. From Booklist
Gr. 8-11. After being caught with her best friend's Sophie's boyfriend at a summer party, Annabel Greene is starting her junior year alone and ostracized. But what appeared to be infidelity was really attempted rape. Fans of Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak (1999) will find obvious parallels here, including the play on the title, but Dessen spins her own quality tale of a young girl finding her voice, and finding an audience. Annabel's troubles are exacerbated by her family's refusal to acknowledge its problems: middle sister Whitney's severe anorexia or the three sisters' waning interest in modeling. A budding friendship with classmate Owen, a dj at the community radio station who is never without music to drown out the silence, helps Annabel listen to her own heart and risk speaking out honestly. Characterization and dialogue are expertly done, and Owen's anger-management advice and efforts to broaden Annabel's music tastes ("Don't think, or judge. Just listen") strengthen the theme of the story: honesty. Teen girls who meet Dessen for the first time here will be looking for her backlist. Cindy Dobrez

Models, family, and bacon...
By Claire Hennessy
Sarah Dessen's latest novel focuses on Annabel, the youngest in her family and the sweet, nice one who avoids confrontation and, ever since becoming best friends with the popular-yet-caustic Sophie, avoids standing up for herself. Her family's attention is centred around her older sister Whitney and her eating disorder, and Annabel's white lies - telling her mom she's fine, not discussing the night when she and Sophie stopped being friends - keep things going smoothly. It's not until she meets Owen Armstrong, another 'outcast' at school who quotes Anger Management phrases at her, that she becomes aware of how often she lies, and more importantly, how often she simply fails to tell the truth. This is a story about a lot of things, from complex family relationships to the world of modeling to the importance of music, but mostly it's the story of one girl finding her voice, and letting people hear the sometimes painful but always true things that she needs to say.

Dessen's Magic Will Never Dissipate
By MG
How beautifully written this book is, I cannot even begin to explain, nor would I ever do it justice. It's hard to believe that Dessen's books keep getting better and better, because I always wonder how she's going to top the last one. Somehow, she always does, and in a way that leaves you desperate for more. I have never been one to re-read books, but I absolutely cannot lay this book to rest. I want to re-live the story, because I can't bear to let the characters go.

Annabel is facing the hardest school year of her life. She's dealing with a lot of family issues including her sister's severe battle with anorexia, and trying to tell her mother that she desperatly wants to quit modeling. Her ex-best friend Sophie no longer talks to her, because she thinks that Annabel slept with her boyfriend, but the truth is far deeper and the worst part is that nobody knows. Now that her friends have turned on her she has nobody until Owen Armstrong, the most unlikely person, befriends her and makes her see life in a new light.

Dessen did a beautiful job of portraying family relationships and how difficult it can be when you have to sacrifice for them. You feel so much a part of this book that it's as if you are sitting at the table with them arguing, crying, screaming, laughing, talking, or holding one another. The struggle with friendships is so real and honest that I'm sure every one of us can relate in some sense to the loss of a best friend, or a misunderstanding that never was resolved that Annabel deals with on a daily basis. The pain she has to endure while desperately hiding the truth from everyone else is incredible and you feel so deeply for her that it may bring you to tears or just want to reach into the book and give her a big hug.

Every young woman should read Dessen's books, but especially this one. It has so many lessons to offer girls on topics that are extremely important for them to be aware of. Everything from love and loss to anorexia and rape, this book has it all and it is so very beautifully done. I cannot express enough just how highly I reccomend this book to women of all ages, but especially to high school girls. Dessen is absolutely brilliant.

Genre: Realistic Fiction

Annabel Greene plays a girl who has everything in the commercial for Kopf's Department Store: she is the top student, popular cheerleader, dazzling prom queen surrounded by friends. In real life though, Annabel Greene is the total opposite. She has no best friend anymore because of Sophie, who ended up spreading rumors about Annabel after one little mistake that wasn't even Annabel's fault. Not only that, but Annabel has to deal with the awkward times at home with her sister's eating disorder, and Annabel not being comfortable about life and speaking her mind at all.

Then she meets a guy named Owen Armstrong, who isn't your usual Romeo, but Annabel learns something very valuable from him... truth. Owen Armstrong is a high schooler who is never parted with his ipod or CD player. Before Annabel was rejected by all of her friends, she had heard that Owen was a freak.Annabel had wondered what he was always listening to. When they become friends, he amazes her with his honesty and confidence. Soon, Annabel is telling Owen all of her feelings that she has wanted to get out for a long time, and they become close until she makes a big mistake-again.

I highly recommend this book for readers who like people like Meg Cabot and similar authors.Sarah Dessen has a way that keeps me interested in her story. If you have read certain books by Sarah Dessen too, you can recognise some of the characters in this story that is brought back from a different point of veiw which I thought was very cool.

I enjoyed reading this book because I was able to put myself into Annabel's shoes, and I wanted to just jump into the book and be her!
