Lt. Tom “Mac” MacDonald saved three members of his unit from a burning Humvee only to wake up in the hospital with a brain injury and blind. Beth Frazer is mother, ex-wife and book store owner faced with one of life’s most difficult decisions. Dani Fraser is the twelve year old daughter of Beth Fraser that suffered severe burns in an automobile accident that put her Dad in the hospital on life support.

Beth and Mac are undeniably drawn to each other but will life past and present get in the way. Will they overcome the fears both harbor from the past? What will Dani think about all the changes in her life? Will Mac find the patience to convince Beth to give him a chance in her and Dani’s life? What is the Soldier’s Gift? Is it magic or a just an old ladies story?

I love this book, I was on an emotional rollercoaster from page one to the end. The characters are beautifully written by Lynne St James as is the story. A Soldier’s Gift is a reminder to us all how much we owe our servicemen and women. Thank you, Lynne for the heartwarming and humorous story. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

A heartwarming touching story!

Beth is a divorced mother of a teenage daughter Dani and a co-owner of a bookstore with her best friend. While waiting for her ex to bring back their daughter from his visit she gets the call that most parents dread receiving. Your daughter has been in an accident along with your ex and is badly burned. Right then and their her life changes forever.
Mac is a soldier who has recently been badly injured from an attack while saving his team. He has lost the use of his sight and now needs a transplant to see again. Beth received a call her ex-husband has no chance of surviving and she now must make the choice to end his life. This is where fate steps in and intertwines Beth and Mac into each others lives.
The very beginning of the story had me sad. I could not imagine how anyone could handle either situation. The coincidence and fate bringing these three people who have been through so much heartache and tragedy really touched me. The story although is sad brings out the good in a bad situation and how with positive attitudes things can be just like before or even better than you had it. A truly heartfelt story one that will leave you with tears in your eyes so have tissues ready.

A Soldier’s Gift is one of those stories that hits all of your emotions. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry and it makes you root for the hero and heroine and long for a happy ending. Mac and Beth desperately need one another, they fit together perfectly, they just don’t know it, well maybe Mac does. It is an emotional rollercoaster that is so touching, especially when you bring in Beth’s daughter and her needs. Lynne St. James weaves the story with a perfect touch, allowing us to love the characters, invest in their story and turning pages late into the night. I highly recommend this book!

Painless Learning for Great Public Speaking

TED Talks reminds me a little of a book I read decades ago… Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. As I read that book I kept thinking, yes, interesting idea – and another. When I finished, I thought ok good pointers but will it make any difference? Then I played someone who I had never won against in dozens of opportunities and I beat them.

Bobby Fischer’s book was one of the first popular books I read that used programmed learning… stepping the reader through a series of painless exercises. I’ve also seen that technique also used in a book that teaches math by setting up the problems faced by Euclid, etc. and giving readers enough clues so they too can reach their own aha moments.

While TED Talks doesn’t use programmed learning, it is very painless reading, packed with lots of good ideas. You may not come away and be able to deliver a TED Talk right away but you will come away with at least several new ideas on how to improve your ability to get your message across in group settings.

Anyone who has seen several TED Talks knows there is no one way to deliver the talks but the book has plenty to say about what generally doesn’t work and what does. I’ll just hit on a few that struck me as helpful:

• Don’t give a sales pitch. The speaker’s job is to give to the audience, not to take.
• Sometimes it takes a little demolition before changing minds. Example: In ancient societies, a third of men died violent deaths. Modern media plays up violence because that’s what sells.We've changed. After crushing their stereotypes, now you can go onto your points.
• Take your audience down your own path of discovery. By asking them to join the process, they get more involved.
• Make sure your words and images work together.
• Don’t leave a slide up once you are finished with it. Better to put up a blank screen to avoid distraction.
• Transitions in Keynote should be kept simple. Cut when shifting to a new idea. Dissolve when slides are related. Dazzle distracts.
• Most TED speakers memorize and then practice so much it sounds spontaneous.
• Wrinkled clothes telegraph you don’t try. If you don't care, why should they?
• Breathe deeply, take your power pose. Be sure to hydrate.
• Keep your notes by your water. When you grab a drink, you can quickly glance at where you are. Notes can be there if you need them. Hopefully, you won't.

"TED Talks" by Chris Anderson is a helpful title for anyone wanting to become a more effective public speaker. The book is around 250 pages and covers such topics as:

1. Getting appropriately personal in your talk.
2. Simplifying difficult to explain concepts.
3. Suggestions for using slides.
4. Pointers on preparing for the presentation.
5. Making an impression.
6. What to wear during your presentation.
7. Using/not using notes while presenting.
8. Suggestions for calming your nerves during the presentation.

Throughout the book Anderson effectively uses the experiences of several people to make his point. The narrative is very readable and smoothly transitions from chapter to chapter. Will be an often used future reference.

I’m always interested in improving my public speaking skills and I’ve heard a lot about TED, so I was curious about this book. The book is split up into the following sections: “Foundation,” “Talk tools,” “Preparation process,” “On stage,” and “Reflection.” Some of the advice discussed included reducing the range of topics to a single connected thread that can be properly developed, using metaphors, the different talk tools (connection, narration, explanation, persuasion, revelation), ways to start strong (delivering a dose of drama, igniting curiosity, showing a compelling slide, video, or object, teasing without giving it away), ways to end with power (call to action, personal commitment, linking back to the opening, etc.) and much more. Bought for class

I'm a grad student and every semester I have a book list to buy the length of my arm. I'm not complaining about this buy though, this compilation of stories has Shirley Jackson's story, The Lottery. You can find it online for free, just Google it. It will change your world. You will probably have to read the story two or three times before you are comfortable putting it down. The story is freaky and will have you wondering and saying for a long time, "WTF?" LOL. Thank GOD I do not live in that town. Although, the question to pose after reading it, is do we actually live in that town and are too blinded by modern day distraction and complacency to see? Enjoy.

Loved this novella from one of my favorite historical romance ...

Loved this novella from one of my favorite historical romance authors. I loved how Marcus and Tessa met - with her saving him and the nod to the de Wolfe legend. I'm new to this Kindle World but will definitely check out more of the authors involved. Although a shorter novella length, the story had everything I love in historical romance - a richly drawn setting, intrigue, a spunky heroine and a strong hero. Great chemistry between Marcus and Tessa. Look forward to exploring more of the de Wolfe stories and the start of this new series from Williams.

Trusting The Wolfe.

This is part of the "World of de Wolfe Pack". These are all inspired by Kathryn Le Veque's character William de Wolfe. This one in set in Victorian times with one of his descendants.

Marcus de Wolfe has ventured down to London for two purposes. One to find out why his business and ships are losing money. The other to fulfill his duty to his heritage and find a bride. Since the death of his first wife and childhood sweetheart, he can't risk his heart again.
Tessa Maycroft is rushing back to her dressmaker shop when she comes across a badly wounded man. He must be out of his mind with blood loss, because he says the strangest things.
Tessa and her aunt have worked hard to make a living, and employ apprentices in the shop to give the girls a way to keep of the streets. If Aunt Betty had not stepped in when Tessa needed her, it could easily been her fate.

This is a beautiful love story with few surprises, but lots of depth. It fits in with the series very well. Our hero, while he may not be as over powering as his ancestor, is fitting for his times. A time when people are just beginning to worry about the poor and downtrodden in the big city. Our heroine fits nicely with this family. She is strong, independent, caring and will not put up with a man who will not see her worth.

I loved it. Now I must find more from this author.

de Wolfe, the hero to trust...and fall for!

From the very first chapter, I knew I would love Trusting the Wolfe. Love the title too!

At first we meet brave de Wolfe and realize he’s going to die if he doesn’t get help. And who should help him but an angel, Tessa Maycroft. She’s a seamstress who just happens by the stabbed-and-left-for-dead Marcus de Wolfe. Their meeting is…wow!…so romantic.

They find each other again, after Marcus has healed, and fate will not leave them alone until they get to know each other better and their passion for each other grows. And through it all they have to solve a mystery they are both intertwined with! See, I told you about the fate thing. :)

I loved de Wolfe. He’s definitely a hero to trust!!!

The Night Before Christmas, Ruth Sanderson Illustrator

I purchased the hardcover edition for my 2 year old daughter. The Illustrations are absoulutely beautiful. The only problem I have with it is that it is not the original poem by Moore. It has been censored, yes, censored. The 2 lines "The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath." have been removed! I understand that smoking is no longer a "PC" thing in this day and age, but when you are purchasing a classic poem, one you remember from your childhood, you expect to get the actual poem. I was disappointed that this fact had not been noted in the product description. I guess it's a little 1984ish to me, to start censoring a book and not inform the consumer.

This is a wonderful version of The Night Before Christmas. Contrary to the other review, I was SO GLAD he is smoking a pipe in the book - this is a classic poem and I don't like the versions that take out the verse about the pipe to be politically correct. The ilustration is wonderful and I would recommend this book to anyone.

This is the older version of The Night Before Christmas. It has the neat pictures in it that I remember when I was small and I am nearly 70 years old. It will be good to read to my great grandchildren.

Short Story

I would read anything this man wrote - but this is not a great example of his best loved work. If you have never read him before - start with Tourist Season or a book of his newspaper articles. He is a very smart, humorous and creative man and writer. He is one of only about 5 writers that I have read that can make me laugh outloud until I can't breath.

Beyond ressurection

Of all the Hiaasen books I've read, this one is the most dissatisfying. His acknowledgement that the book was one of his first and was rejected by numerous agents comes as no surprise. An uninformed hunch: His publishers were pushing him to produce yet another classic, the kind of story we've come to expect from him. Alas, he should have left this one on the cutting room floor.

Great Stuff!

Fans of Carl Hiaasen will not be disappointed except for the fact that this was only a short story. I kept envisioning more character development and more mayhem. Anyone who remembers our involvement in Central America in the early 1980's will recognize many of the characters from that time. South Florida at its post cocaine and gunrunning finest.
