OK, but there are much better alternatives

Frankly, this book is neither here nor there - not a bad book per se, but there are other, much better, choices.
First of all, this is not introductory in the strict sense - you should be fairly good at C programming, but need not know data structures and algorithms. But it can be considered as an introduction to data structures and algorithms if you aren't a novice in C programming.
It is fairly light on maths and analysis of algorithm performance, which may or may not be a bad thing, depending on your requirements. I read the C version of the book, which was quite OK, but i've read much better books since, and the C++ seems to have been added on for market appeal - i feel one should be wary of books which claim to be in ' C and C++ ' ......... make up your mind !!
What i'd suggest is, if you're happy with pseudocode that you can adapt to your needs and don't care for a particular language, go for 'Introduction to algorithms' by Cormen,Leiserson & Rivest.
If you want code in C, go for Sedgewick's 'Algorithms in C' - arguably as good Cormen et al's book on concepts, and 'K & R' class code, ie C code that will remind you of Kernighan & Ritchie's classic C textbook.
However, if you want C++, then Sedgewick's C++ version or Mark Allen Weiss's book might be a good choice.
To be fair, this is a reasonably good book, with the explanations being reasonably clear, but the breadth & depth simply don't compete with the books mentioned above. After all, if you can get great books, why settle for anything less ?

Academic in nature and not for the beginning programmer

First off, my suggestion for this book would be as follows. For the computer science or electrical engineering students taking a data structures class to supplement lecture material. Don't get this book if you come from some other language, know your C at least. If you are a beginning C/C++ programmer that needs to learn data structures without having the benefit of an instructor I wouldn't recommend this book, try something less formal unless you love reading technical books.
The book covers a good amount of material and as the preface of the book states it is meant for a 2 semester course in data structures. The book covers stacks, recursion, queues, list, binary trees, sorting, searching, hashing, graphs, etc... All that is essential to becoming a well founded programmer. There are exercises at the end of each chapter to reinforce the material. The material presented is theoretical in nature not much C/C++ code but that's fine.
My opinion of this book has changed over the last year. I had to purchase the book for my first data structures class in college. After reading just the first chapter I was bewildered and confused! Most of the students agreed with me that it was a confusing book and without the benefit of an excellent instructor we'd surely would've been lost. I cannot stress this enough, unless you are very smart student this book should be a supplement to lecture material. I personally didn't read the chapters until after lecture and it usual for me read material before class.
But now a year after I first opened the book I find it a truly great reference. Certainly the book has grown on me and maybe later I'd probably give it a five. For example, recently I had to write a threaded example for my Windows programming class and I wanted to something time consuming yet simple that actually did something, so I just referred to the book on the fibonacci sequence using recursion and used that.
My final thoughts about this book are a bit strange. First off, this is the only data structures book I have read (so far) therefore my opinion lacks some perspective. At first I didn't like it but as time has passed I find that I really like the book. If you are a student going into a data structures class, most likely you'll be required to get a book on data structures and it's possible that you won't get assigned this book. But I would recommend it after you take the class. If you do get it for your class, don't sell it back to the school! You may just find it useful in the future.

Yes. It is not for beginners.

I find it annoying when a book is negatively dished because it is not understood. How can you give a review on something that you don't understand? Yes, go ahead and feel frustrated; but, consider that it might have alot to offer and that you are missing some fundamental knowledge/skills that the book assumes. I too found the book challenging, but instead of quitting at difficult points, I simply researched the topic online or in more elementary books. In all cases once the lightbulb when on in my head, I'd go back to this book and was able to follow along and greatly appreciate it.
I really liked this book because it is very detailed without being chatty, it uses a good combination of C code and pseudo-code, isn't mathematically challenging and has a great index.
I'd give it a 5 if it provided more C code, introduced new topics more gradually, and provided answers and code for the many exercises because some important implementations are left as exercises. I do however understand why there are no answers to the exercises and why more C code is not provided -- it's meant as textbook for a university course. Also, if you are looking for C++ implemenations (I wasn't) in this book then you'll be disappointed because C++ is rarely discussed.

An Introduction to Haiti's Indigenous Spiritual Tradition

I am not generally excited about the new crop of introductory books on Afro-diasporic religions. First of all, most tend to be very light weight, and many contain outright errors and falsehoods. Even when they don't, they often are guilty of oversimplification and most are filled with shoddy or questionable conclusions. So, it was a pleasant surprise for me to read Mambo Chita Tann's book on Haitian Vodou. Is it perfect? No. Could she, and I know her academic qualifications, have written a much more detailed and challenging, and hence for me more satisfying, text? Certainly. That being said, this was a great book. She gives a sound history, and contextualized these traditions in a way that was both accurate and accessible for the average reader.

There is another issue I have had more than once with this genre of book on Vodou. That issue is the "practical" ritual designed for non-initiates. Often they reflect the author's own imagination and do not represent anything found within the tradition itself. I recognize that a Mambo or Houngan (Vodou Priestess or Priest) may not be eager to give away their secret recipes or at least not in all details) but then don't invent new practices. Someone reading that book will think that what they have read is a "real" Vodou practice when it in fact is not. In this book Mambo T gives a detailed set of instructions for an iliminasyon (illumination) - a simply ritual for opening the way to better communication with one's loas, zanges, or spirits - the saints of Vodou. Some will have other ways to performing this, and it may be true that in many houses at least, the herbs and other components are different or more complicated than the recipe given here. However, this is a valid and effective ritual, and it is the real deal, not someone's invention from outside the tradition.

So, on a couple of the most important points, I give this book a big thumbs up! I still would argue that if this subject really interests you, you need to read the classics, especially those by Milo Rigaud, Maya Deren, and Alfred Métraux, but this is a concise, well written text with some practical advice for someone who wants to do more than read about this tradition. It has earned its space alongside those others.

Amazing and a must have!

This book, authored by Mambo T, as she is affectionately known, is an amazing introduction to Haitian Vodou. The much reviled and misunderstood spiritual practice is in actuality a beautiful and deeply moving tradition. Mambo Chita Tann conveys the essence of Haitian Vodou the way a person not able to live in Haiti, or not familiar with it's culture, can understand. She also stresses how important the community, family, and ancestors are to Vodou.

The book is broken down into three parts: Part One What is Haitian Vodou? Part Two Lezanj: Meet the Twenty-One Nations of the Lwa and Part Three Seremoni: Haitian Vodou Ceremonies and Rites of Passage. The chapters clearly present the information and are an indispenible resource for the beginner, as well as a refresher for the more experienced practitioner. It will help you on your path if you choose to become a Vodouisant, or if not, give a better understanding of how it all works. Additionally the Appendix provides a valuable guide for further research and study. One can only pray Mambo T will write a follow up book and delve deeper into Haitian Vodou.

As a member of Sosyete Fos Fe Yo We, I have been able to receive invaluable teaching from Mambo Chita Tann firsthand. She is an experienced and incredibly learned woman and knows her stuff! I am ever grateful for all her hard work the last year, and for listening to her kids and elders who told her she really is the best person to get this introduction out there.

If you are interested in the Real Vodou, don't miss this book.

This is a great introduction to Vodou as practiced in Haiti. Mambo explains very clearly the structure of Vodou in Haiti and how to proceed to begin to practice this religion of serving the Lwa. Wonderful information about many of the major Lwa helps one understand them and their importance. Initiation is explained in a way that is very clear and one is shown the necessity of joining a societe in order to really learn how to serve the Lwa. Really good advice about how to avoid the pitfall of falling into the hands of charlatans and how to recognize a true Mambo or Houngan. All in all, this book is a MUST for anyone thinking about entering the path of Vodou as practiced in Haiti.

Populated with drunks, loggers, card sharks, and whores, and set in the small towns and surrounding trout streams and mountains of western Montana, the stories concern themselves with the complexities of fly fishing, logging, fighting forest fires, playing cribbage, and being a husband, a son, and a father.

By turns raunchy, poignant, caustic, and elegiac, these are superb tales which express, in Maclean's own words, "a little of the love I have for the earth as it goes by." A first offering from a 70-year-old writer, the basis of a top-grossing movie, and the first original fiction published by the University of Chicago Press, A River Runs through It and Other Stories has sold more than a million copies. About the Author
Norman Maclean (1902-1990), woodsman, scholar, teacher, and storyteller, grew up in the Western Rocky Mountains of Montana and worked for many years in logging camps and for the United States Forestry Service before beginning his academic career. He was the William Rainey Harper Professor of English at the University of Chicago until 1973.

A book you will read more than once.

Norman Maclean began writing late in life, passing away not long after penning this extraordinary piece, depriving us of his gift just as he arrived. The book is actually three short stories but the focus is clearly on the novella "A River Runs Through It". On the surface, the title story is his recollections of his father, a Presbyterian minister, and his troubled but talented brother, with whom he fished. Set in the Montana of Maclean's youth, he paints exquisitely vivid and beautiful word pictures of a land and water and family now gone. At the core is the frustration of the often-futile attempt of trying to help another or trying to save a loved one from their self-destruction. There are passages here which are as wonderfully written as anything in English. Not a page passes without discovering a superbly crafted gem. "So it is...that we can seldom help anybody. Either we don't know what part to give or maybe we don't like to give any part of ourselves. Then, more often than not, the part that is needed is not wanted. And even more often, we do not have the part that is needed." "It is those we live with and love and should know who elude us." Throughout the tale, his life, his religion, his family, his fly-fishing are metaphors, each for the other. And the words of each are heard in the waters and stone of the rivers. He is haunted, he tells us, by waters. I am haunted by his words which approach poetry.

Warning: This book isn't really about fishing.

A River Runs Through It is quite simply the single greatest book I have ever read. Maclean's language is as terse and economical as any in Hemingway, but Maclean imparts the type of true feeling and emotion into his simple words that Hemingway himself was incapable of producing. A River Runs Through It is not a story about fishing, but rather a tale of family. The family just happens to share a love of fishing, and Maclean's love of waters has more to do with its close association with his family than with the actual fishing that takes place there. It is the family's tragic loss of Paul, the true master fly-fisherman of the clan, that ties Maclean to waters and inspires the closing lines of the novella. A River Runs Through It delves into interpersonal relationships in a manner which grips the reader and makes him/her reflect on his/her own family. Although I am myself an avid fisherman, I am a more avid reader and I can say that for my part, the fishing element of the story is unimportant except for its association with Maclean's family. Maclean's prose is beautiful to point that his description of a common object or occurence could bring the reader to tears. A River Runs Through It is quite simply the most beautiful thing I have ever read. Period.

An absolutely beautiful book. Currently sitting in my local coffee shop with blotchy cheeks and mascara running down my face.

I don't usually write reviews, but I was compelled to write one for this book. I am a writer, not a fisherman. I actually don't really like fishing nor know anything about it. That didn't make me any less spellbound by this tale.

The writing is gorgeous and precise and sly and so unexpected beautiful and logical and funny and emotional. It reads differently than the books I'm used to reading. There's no faux suspense. There's no tricks or shock value. It's just a beautiful story.

It took me a little while to get completely invested. I'd say I read the first 30 pages slowly, and then the remainder all at once (of the title story).

I know this isn't a great book review, but just wanted to add my opinion. I'm a 26 year old female who works in the tech industry. My one fishing experience was when I caught a fish with my grandpa when I was 7 and it was bleeding and I cried for two days. I loved this book. Don't discount it because it's about fishing. It is beautiful and perfect, or maybe I should say "more perfect."

Outstanding Collaboration Coloring Book – 55 Different Artists with 2 Designs Each – printed on one side of page

I know the work of several of the artists in the coloring book (e.g., Jason Hamilton and Laura Iancu) but there are so many more whose work I have never seen. At the back of the large book is a listing and small biography of each of the contributing artists. Best news of all – there are to be more of these Treasury books in the future.

I think this is a fantastic way to get colorists more familiar with the wide variety of artists and artistic styles that are becoming available. I know that I plan to purchase several coloring books based on what I have seen and begun to color. The styles are so varied and unusual, I took my time in filming my silent video, so you can see each page (though it made for a very long video compared to most that I film.)

One of the projects in this book is a beautiful “flower child” woman from Jason Hamilton's “Beautiful Women” coloring book. I'll include a photo of my finished study of that picture below. As I finish more designs, I will add more photos. I'm just thrilled with the chance to color so many styles and at a wonderful price as well. It's amazing that these artists and the publisher are making this book available at their cost. Just simply one of the best bargains out there.

I will provide more detail about what I found in the physical book below, but for a quick overview, this is what I discovered:

110 Varied Designs (2 each from 55 different artists)
Designs are printed on one side of page
Paper is thin, white and non-perforated
Glue Binding
Designs do not merge into the binding
Alcohol and water based markers bleed through the page
India ink and gel pens leave shadows of color on back of page
Coloring pencils work well with the paper but also leave shadows on the back of the page

The large (and heavy!) book is filled with 110 designs which are printed on one side only of thin, white, non-perforated paper. The paper is at least the quality of that used by CreateSpace. The binding is glued. The designs do not merge into the binding. In fact, there is an artist attribution on the bound side of each page. That lets you know who is responsible for what artwork and additionally, gives you plenty of space to cut out any page you wish to remove from the book.

I can get the book to lay fairly flat by breaking the spine of the book; however, it is so thick that even laying flat may be too high for me to color comfortably. I will most likely be cutting pages out before I color them.

I test all of my coloring books with a variety of tests and coloring medium. I will list that information at the end of this review for anyone interested. Here is the results of my tests:

All markers (brands, nibs, etc.) alcohol or water-based bleed through this paper. India ink pens and gel pens leave distinct shadows of color on the back of the page. Coloring pencils work well but also leave shadows on the back of the page. The soft lead pencils go on really thick and creamy and layer and blend beautifully. The hard lead pencils have good color but do leave dents at the back of the page.

As I mentioned above, my plan is to remove pages from the book before I color. If you decide to keep the pages together, I highly recommend a blotter page of card stock or very heavy weight paper to keep ink and/or marring dents from ruining the pages below the one you are working on.

These are the coloring medium that I use for testing. In my tests, I use the medium in a manner that is perhaps more intense than others. I layer multiple coats of water-based makers for blending purposes, color large elements with gel pens, and with coloring pencils, I use multiple layers, multiple colors, as well as blending and burnishing them to see how the paper reacts and if the color moves properly.

If there is something else you feel I should be testing, please let me know and I will see if I can add it to my growing pile:

Alcohol-based markers – Copic Sketch, Prismacolor double ended markers (brush and fine point), Sharpies (fine and ultra-fine) Bic Mark-its (fine and ultra-fine)

Waater-based markers – Tombows dual end markers (brush and fine point), Stabilo 88, and Staedler triplus fineliners

India Ink: Faber-Castell PITT artist pens (brush tip)

Gel Pens: Sakura, Fiskars, Uni-ball Signo in the following sizes - 0.28/0.38/0.5/1.0 and Tekwriter

Coloring Pencils: Prismacolor Premier Soft Core, Derwent Colorsoft, Prismacolor Verithins, Caran D'Ache Pablo Colored Pencils and Faber-Castell Polychromos

Truly a Treasure!

I received my copy today, and am amazed at the compilation of talent inside. 110 drawings on single-sided pages by 55 different artists. Only a few are familiar to me, and the rest are new. But, the drawings! Oh, cannot stop praising this book. You cannot go wrong at this price. Only $6.14, AT COST. To benefit us colorists, with hopes that you will find new artist favorites and purchase their books to add to your collection. So cheap, why buy just one???? Purchase for friends and family as gifts, buy copies to donate to shelters or nursing homes, or to your local library.

Where do I start? This is the largest coloring book I own. It's MASSIVE for an ADULT coloring book! 245 single sided pages with 110 images to color from a wide variety of different artists. This lets me sample different styles and what they are like to color. Cityscapes, mandalas, people, animals, and much more, this has everything! Oh, and the price is unreal. I'm going to buy a few more as gifts.

Lacks Coverage of Exam Objectives

This book is extremely short and fails to address many of the objectives of the CISM exam. Let me give just two examples. First, the book does not even mention KPIs, KGIs or KRIs, which are clearly listed as exam objectives. Second the phrase "business case" does not appear anywhere in the book despite the development of business cases being a core component of the CISM exam. The "practice test" in this book has only 40 questions compared to the 200 found on the real exam.

pretty good... we will see when test time comes

short, condense and relatively clear. This is about the only book out there for the CISM. I love the way it breaks down all of the topics so you know where you are strong and where you are weak. They need to update this though since we are going to 2013.

I found this to be helpful to me. I carry it in my purse and when I am at appointments while riding or such I can pull this out and refresh on the material. I can't always be at a computer or carry the huge book with me.

Jankowski surveys the history of virginity in Christian thought from ancient times though the Renaissance, contrasting the Catholic tradition on this issue with Protestant doctrine as it developed in early modern England. With the Reformation, theologians argued that marriage was the ideal, even that vowed virginity was unnatural. If the multiple sexual, erotic, economic, and communal arrangements of Catholic Europe offered possibilities for destabilizing the categories male/female, married/virgin, chaste/unchaste, she contends, Protestant thought rigidified these binary oppositions.

Exploring resistance to the patriarchal sexual economy, Jankowski considers representations of female virgins in English stage plays from 1590 to about 1670. In these dramatic texts she finds characters who range from collaborators with patriarchy to women who utterly repudiate marriage, opting instead for a life completely outside the heterosexual gender paradigm-and who thus, like Isabella in Measure for Measure or Moll Cutpurse in Dekker and Middleton's The Roaring Girl, become "queer virgins."
